"A Family Tradition for 125 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, October 8, 1991 - 29 Minor softball to wrap up season at general meeting on Oct. 22 As the days and nights get cooler, Minor Softball comes to an end for another season. We had an excellent year for both the house leagues and the rep teams. We had 530 boys and girls Playing ball this year on 39 teams from Port Perry. Greenbank entered eight teams, Seagrave entered four teams and Cartwright two teams. The players raised about $4,000 through the fundraiser which will go towards the three new diamonds we are putting behind the arena in co- operation with the township. This will allow more teams to participate and practices can be arranged for all teams not just the rep teams. More tourna- ments could also be held. Our cost is $25,000 over three years. This was the first year since I have been president that we sent all five of our rep teams to the O.A.S.A. provincial champi- onships. The Taylor Ford Mites were the best in the Ontario 'C' division bringing home the gold. The Canadian Tire Ban- tams brought home the silver as they were runners up to the champs. Congratulations to all teams for representing Port Perry in such a proud manner. People will certainly know that Port Perry is on the map after this year. Special thanks to all the con- venors for setting up all the teams and schedules. Without our assistance we would not able to have such a well run organization. Also thanks to all the dedicat- ed coaches who have the posi- tion of teaching and showing how discipline comes to the dia- mond. Sometimes this is a thankless job but when you see a boy or girl make that great catch or hit that solid ball and see the big smile it somehow makes it all worthwhile. Thanks too to the umpires who came out to help. Several were moms and dads. I hope you enjoyed the games even though you were in a different position. We also had several boys and girls helping with the snack bar. We hope you will come back next year. Special thanks to the Port Perry Star and the Scugog Citi- zen who have both been very generous in their time and sup- port. Keep iD¢he good work! This will be my last year as president. I have held this posi- tion for the past six years and I feel it is time for someone else to take over. I have met many wonderful people over the Lions Club defeat Gord Lewis 2-0 Lions Club 2- Gord Lewis Motors 0 The season opener saw two well balanced teams hit the ice flying. Play moved up and down the ice during the first period with neither team able to put the puckin the net. Then, late in the first, Tim Wray picked up a loose puck and fed a perfect pass up ice to Josh Martyn who made no mis- take and blasted the game's first goal past the Gord Lewis goaltender to give the Lions Club a one tonothing lead. Gord Lewis was not about to quit. Time and time again they swarmed the Lions' zone with aggressive play by Joel Phoe- nix, Jason Gunn, and Devon Symes. At a time where it seemed almost certain that the game would be tied, Sawn Fletcher poke-checked a de- fender, broke in alone on goal and buried a shot in the corner to give Lions a two goal margin in the mid-second period. The third period saw Gord Lewis showing all kinds of spir- it and putting on the pressure. Jason Crosier and Chris Thompson came close to nar- rowing the margin but Gord Lewis was foiled time and time again by Fuhr-like moves by Li- ons' netminder Johnathon Froats and by solid defence from Lions' defenders Tom Baker and Mat Elliot. When the dust had settled, Lions Club emerged victorious by a 2-0 margin. The stage is set for a close rivalry between two even teams.
