Citizens are bothered by a whole host of issues-taxes (pick one) continue to steamroll (no one politician can change taxes) over pocketbooks, busi- ness and personal bankrupt- cies remain chokingly high. Canada's constitutional dilem- ma continues to destabilize-all of these problems and more are being acutely felt by Canadians every day of the year. So far, about 2,500 people have signed their names to her petition, which she started cir- culating at the end of August in response to the death of Kayla Klaudusz. The petition states "Kayla wasn't allowed to live, her killers shouldn't be able to live either." Scugog residents have had mixed reactions to the petition, says Ms. Picard. Some people have called her crazy and writ- ten profanities on the petition, and she has had doors slammed in her face while tak- ing the petition door-to-door. But on the plus side, she says a lot of people have been supportive and have helped her circulate the petition. "I've got a lot of support and a lot of help so I'm pleased with that," she says, "but I wish there were more people taking a stand." She believes the interest in her campaign is starting to die down, in part because there hasn't been more cases like Kayla's in the news lately. When she feels she has enough signatures, the peti- tion will be sent to the Toronto Sun, which has been conduct- ing its own campaign. The peti- tions will then be sent to the Klaudusz family, who will for- ward them to the federal gov- ernment. standably concerned and anx- ious about the future of Scugog Township. Scugog voters will find the most productive and economi- cal way to make their feelings known is through a face-to-face meeting with their elected (or elected to be) representative(s). As employees of Scugog Town- ship taxpayers, policiticians are accountable for listening and responding to the views and sentiments of their constit- uency. What better way to in- form your future local represen- tative(s) regarding the critical issues of the day than through a frank discussion? The anger, concerns or sug- gestions of the public reach lo- cal government directly through each politician. It is also very important politicians hear your praise if you are sat- isfied with the way they are representing you, regardless of whether their party isin power, Armed with feedback from their voters, the officials can work with a clearer focus on the needs and wants of their con- stituents. of your concerns' Inlieu of an actual meeting, a personal letter or telephone call are both effective means of reaching your (would be) Scu- gog representative(s). Your po- itical respresentatives' phone numbers can be found in the hone book.
