PORT PERRY STAR - Wednesday, October 16 1991 - 21 This giant pile of food was gathered by Irene Manitiu prs s' Grade 5 class at R. H. Cornish Public School last week as their contribution to Operation Scugog's food drive. Cornish students hold food drive A curious event happened at R.H. Cornish Public School last week. A pile of food ap- pearsy just inside the front oor. On Monday it was just a small pile, only about 50 cans, explains Nicholas Pelyk, one of the Grade 5 students in Irene Manitius's class who collected the food. The food drive was an- nounced over the school's pub- lic address system and a letter was sent home to the students' parents. The pile kept growing as Nicholas and his classmates picked up bags and boxes of non-perishable food every morning from the classrooms. By the end of the week there was a mountain of cans and bags and boxes heaped up pre- cariously in the hall. Community Care volunteers Jackie McEnaney, Doris Grier- son and Roy Grierson turned up on Friday to help the stu- dents load the food into cars to be transported to the Opera- tion Scugog food bank. Although the Grade 5 class kept records of how much food was contributed by each class, the only prize for the top con- tributors is the satisfaction of knowing they helped feed hun- gry families this Thanksgiv- ing.
