Tr = mgt 32 - PORT PERRY STAR - Wednesday, October 16 1991 The Port Perry Legion Pee Wee "A's kicked off regular season play in Ajax on Oct. 6. The coaching staff of Gary Geer and Ed Teno are pleased with what they have seen in Pearce Novice squad lose two matches Port Perry's Novice 1 team played two games this week- end. On Friday night the boys were defeated 6-0 by a more ex- perienced Cobourg squad. The score was not indicative of the play. Adam Moynes hus- tled hard in the forward posi- tion and David Justynski played strongly on defense. On Saturday night, the boys played a strong Peterborough team, After two periods of play they were down 3-0. The final period witnessed a resurgence on the part of Port Perry with Scotty Brownson scoring first, assisted by the strong fore- checking of Jason Whitworth and Braden Tarbotton. Moments later after Port stole the puck at centre ice, Bil- ly Carr torpedoed a shot be- tween the legs of a startled Pe- terborough netminder to draw Port within one goal. Despite a furious last minute onslaught, Port Perry came up one goal short. Other Port Perry players worked hard. Sean Jeffrey played well defen- sively and Port Perry's new mi- cro machine, Mike LeFort showed flashes of promise from the right side. PPHS girls basketball The Port Perry High School senior girls basketball team travelled to Father Pereyma High School in Oshawa on Oct. The Port girls gave the term "winning ugly" a new meaning in coming away with a 48-39 victory over Pereyma. Slack defence, missed opened shots, and generally unin- spired play seemed to be the or- der of the day as the Port girls performed at less than their est. ) On a positive note, however, coach Bryan Davies was very pleased with the strong play of Vanessa Gibson, who turned in her best performance of the yearso far. Port Perry plays an exhibi- tion game against Oshawa's Eastdale on Oct. 15 at Port Perry High School and then commences a string of LOSSA league contests in preparation for the LOSSA playoffs Nov. 13 and Nov. 15 » Spruce and Pine trees 4 to 25 feet » Screened top soil & peat $10.00 per yard » Tree spade service $75.00 hr. In Ajax the host squad opened the scoring late in the first with Port replying before the buzzer, to knot the score at one. This was Daryl McEna- ney's first of two on a wrap- around effort from behind the niet with Tim Fitzpatrick drawing an assist. The home team scored one unanswered tally in the second to take a one-goal lead into the third period. There was lots of end-to-end action with some heavy hit- ting. It looks like these guys like the rough stuff! Port tied it up late in the game on McEnaney's second goal of the night, with assists going to linemates Mike Mord- en and Fitzpatrick. Luke Car- naghan and Brian Bickmore were strong in net, holding off the determined Ajax attackers. Hometown action got under- way on Friday night against Cobourg. It seems like only yesterday we were playing fastball agianst some of these guys! The visitors scored twice ear- ly in the first to put Port Perry Legion back on their heels a "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Legion Pee Wee coaches pleased with what they've seen bit. Down two going into the second, Port decided enough was enough and mounted a comeback on goals by Kevin Hoffs and Matt Philips, with assists going to Brad Morton, Jeff Clarke and Tommy Cham- bers. With less than five minutes gone in the third period, Co- bourg pulled ahead and seemed to take control of the game. Port fought hard to get back their momentum and did so after a Cobourg penalty for pulling down Tim Fitzpatrick on a break-away resulted in a rare "penalty shot". A cool, calm Fitzpatrick roared up the ice, gave the goalie a couple of head fakes and found the five hole to tie it at three. The home crowd were brought to their feet again when Kevin Hoffs got his sec- ond goal of the night, fed by Fitzpatrick and Todd Parry. A 4-3 victory is on the books against an always tough Co- bourg team. On Sunday, coaches Geer and Teno took the team on the road, this time to Pickering. Both teams played cautiously through the first two periods, neither seemingly interested in pulling ahead. However, the third period was a different story with sev- en goals being scored. Picker- ing drew first blood and the best Port was able to do was draw even. After the smoke had cleared and with a little over a minute to go, Tim Fitzpatrick tied it up on a pass from Mike Morden. Tim repeated his heroics with 10 seconds left to put an- other win in the books, this time on a set-up by Daryl McE- naney. The scoring was all done by one forward line: Tim Fitzpa- trick (three goals), Daryl McE- naney (one goal and one assist) and Mike Morden (three as- sists). Good work, boys! The defence, consisting of Jeff Clarke, Mike Heasman, Chris Drury and Rob Murphy, have proven to be very effec- tive in handling some tough situations this past wee Goaltenders Bickmore and Carnaghan can rest a little easier knowing this four are there to help. The team anxiously awaits the arrival of Jason Logan, who is in re-hab, recovering from a broken arm sustained late in the summer. Jason will complete one of the forward lines and will be a welcome ad- dition. The next home game is Fri- day night at 9:15 p.m. against Lindsay.
