"Ad Hoc Committee meets to discuss solutions for noise An ad hoc committee formed to investigate noise complaints from residents in the vicinity of Mother Jackson's Open Kitch- ens brought forth recommenda- tions to township council at last week's meeting. The committee, comprised of chairman Don Cochrane and members Glenn Malcolm and Marilyn Pearce, met on separ- ate occasions with residents and the management of Mother Jackson's to discuss matters concerning noise, vibration, parking and garbage. Through its investigation, the committee observed that the company has made at- tempts to alleviate the prob- lems through a number of dif- ferent methods. They include time restrictions for deliveries between 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.; con- structing a decorative wooden fence along the south line of the property at its own expense; made an attempt with its sup- pliers to use quieter trucks and equipment; has attempted to reduce its food waste going into garbage bins by composting; improved the site maintenance surrounding the waste collec- tion area; and imported and in- stalled a $10,000-muffler sys- tem to assist with boiler noise. Through its discussions with the residents, the committee found that the quieter trucks are being used but not consis- tently. Some trucks are left running adjacent to backyards. The noisiest times in the gar- bage and boiler areas tend to be between 11 p.m. and midnight. The noise continues on week- ends when no one is working. One fan located over the gar- bage room is the biggest noise culprit. The committee's recommen- dations to the company include turning unnecessary equip- ment off on the weekends; en- closing the garbage area with an opaque screen; adding insu- lation outside of the garbage chute to muffle the noise; either repairing or replacing the fan over the garbage room; limiting deliveries from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on the north side of the building only; requesting that suppliers send only trucks that have an appropriate muffler system; and when old equip- ment needs to be replaced, it be relocated on the north side of the building. : The committee also came Turn to Page 5 FOR ALL YOUR BRIDAL NEEDS -- 209 Mary Street, Port Perry (located in the Personal Touch building) 985-8208 Nellie Stell WS We've Moved to 235 Queen Street (the old Port Perry Star Building) A NOTICE OF INTEREST TO THOSE WHO APPRECIATE THE FINER THINGS THAT LIFE HAS TO OFFER...
