PORT PERRY STAR OFFICE CENTRE 188 Mary St. - Port Peny My wife Em's Uncle Hayward is a dear old guy who's getting on in years and doesn't real- ize he reall } his car anymore. The problem is, Aunt Ivy claims that he's fine - as long as she's with him to point out various obstacles like pedestrians, red lights and other cars. Em and her cousins are worried that he'll hurt himself, or someone else, before he stops driving. I guess it's human nature to think that something like that will never happen to you. My point here is that there's another member of Em's family that I worry about, too, for a dif- ferent reason. Cousin Gord's house is an electri- cal mess. He's done his own wiring and not had it inspected, for example, and as I've said be- fore, his place is just an electrical house of hor- rors. As a handyman Gord is about as useful as a chocolate teapot, and there's a disaster wait- ing to happen at his place. So you can imagine how pleased I was when Gord came to me for advice recently about straightening out that dog's breakfast of exten- sion cords and spaghetti-style wiring in his place. I told him The Hydro would have to in- spect the wiring of course as he should have had them do a long time ago, but that I could get him started on planning a new wiring sys- tem. If you have doubts about your own wiring sys- tem, here are some "symptoms" of inadequate wiring: 1)You always have to disconnect one appli- ance to plug in another.; 2)You've got "octopus" outlets throughout the house; 3)You've got extension cords strung around rooms to connect lamps, etc.; 4)Fuses blow, or circuit breakers trip often; 5)Irons, toasters, or waffle irons are slow to heat up; 6)Your lights dim noticeably when appliances are on; 7)Your television picture shrinks, or reception is poor when appliances are on; 8)You have to enter rooms and stairways in darkness because there aren't any three-way or four-way switches. Right now, I'm in the basement, mapping out a strategy that's going to help old Gord turn his "house of horrors" into a 200-amp paradise! x x x This newspaper, in conjunction with Ontario Hydro, is bringing you Phil's Basement to help "bring home" ideas on how to save energy. To receive the brochure "Planning your Home's Electrical Wiring System" call Ontario Hydro at. 1-800-263-9000 and tell them Phil sent you. y shouldn't be behind the wheel of DID YOU KNOW?
