| A Family Tradition for 125 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Real Estate Section - Wednesday, October 16, 1991 - 11 Salem witch trials documented in Arthur Millar's play "The Crucible" Imagine a society where, by simple accusation, you could be found guilty of a crime unseen by man, and hanged for it. You are accused of being a witch or having made a com- pact with the devil, and your only defence is denial, because there is no proof against you. But because witchcraft is an invisible crime, you are guilty by accusation and association. Then the hysteria grows. Neighbors accuse neighbors, friends accuse friends, and pri- vate vengances begin to work through the accusations. Can we possibly imagine such a nightmare? The Crucible, Arthur Mill- er's towering work about the Salem witch trials of 1692, de- tails the happenings of such a society, when mass hysteria swept through Salem, causing innocent men and women to be hanged. Of the great plays of the 50s, The Crucible stands as per- haps the most important, and certainly the boldest. As fear of McCarthyism swept through the entertainment industry and innocent. men and women were ruined for their alleged communist ties, Arthur Miller grew enraged. As he himself was accused of being a communist, he likened the happenings to the Salem witch hunts. He went to Sa- lem, Mass., and researched the happenings of 1692 in careful detail. The end result was The Cru- cible, an explosive play that portrays the mass hysteria that swept through both Salem and the United States. Director John H. Foote, who has also directed the award- winning Borelians in Agnes of God, Death of a Salesman, and The Glass Menagerie, chose The Crucible because he be- lieves strongly in the theme of individuals taking responsibil- ity for their own actions, and the greater theme of man's re- sponsibility to challenge cor- rupt authority. "It is the most challenging work I have ever tackled," said Mr. Foote. "Recreating true happenings has been difficult because I wanted the details to be historically accurate, which I think we have accomplished, but also the play must be both educational and entertaining. The Crucible is, I would have to say, both terrifying and thought-provoking." Among the 21 cast members are ACT-CO THEA award- winners and nominees, Ron Getz, Bunty Webb, Steve Foote, Halie Vogel, John Fran- com, as well as the fine acting talents of Sherri Todd, Greg Banting, Lorraine Chiusolo, Lynne Atkinson, Brooke Shan- ley, Kellea and Kristin Pass- more, Bruce Williamson, Bren- da Holden, Vern Vogel, Tara Galberg, Ray Porrill, Lisa Tay- lor, Michael Leblanc, Joe Sze- keres, and Marcus Keégan. Donna Shanley has pro- duced the play, marking her fifth collaboration with direc- tor Foote, while Norma Van Camp has designed the set. Paul Rotterman is the Bore- lians' company stage manager this year while Moe Lafrom- boise and Jan Jurgenson have built the set. = The Crucible, which is en- tered in the drama category for this year's ACT-CO Festival, offers a great opportunity for the audience to see one of the more infamous events in histo- ry, as well as seeing a truly scary play. The play runs Oct. 24-26 and Nov. 1-2. Tickets are $10 and are available at Irwin Smith FRIDAY, OCTOBER 18 SALE TIME 6:00 P.M.
