8- PORT PERRY STAR - Wednesday, October 16 1991 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" a: LeHers io the editor From Page 7 even subsidized houses, were not discussed. The 100 residents who voiced their concerns regard- ing the rezoning and official plan amendment may be very caring people, but at their meeting they appeared to be more concerned about their own way of living and main- taining the value of their own homes. I do share, however, their concern for traffic volume, schools, recreational facilities and emergency services. But these issues can be discussed and possibly solved in a more amicable way, especially when a local developer is involved. We do have several develop- ers living in our own communi- ty who see the desirability and need for affordable housing, and we can be glad about that. If in this initiative they become self-centred and greedy and plan too high a density, they have to be corrected and their plans scaled down. But we . All parties should work together ought not to begrudge them a decent or small profit. Living south of town, I travel many times a week to Port Perry via Prince Albert, and I have confidence in the people around Union Avenue and Josephine Street to allow me safe passage. Hopefully, all parties can work together to find an appro- priate resolution to this issue. Yours truly, John den Boer Sr Ry R ( We are talking J Santa Claus 3 Parade! . NoBoDY'S RY. LOIS OF KIDS DO. IT8 JUST THAT SUCKING THUMB THE by Lynn johnston Let's get serious about hardball To the Editor: I grew up on the south shore of the St. Lawrence River -- across from Montreal -- a small town named St. Lambert. Al- though slightly larger, it was a town not unlike Port Perry. We had softball organized for us by the adults. We had base- ball or hardball organized by ourselves. From the first warm breeze of spring until the chill of road hockey season, we played ball morning, noon and night. Mornings and afternoons, when the choice was ours, we played baseball-hardball. In the evenings we reported dutifully to our well-organized softball teams. We enjoyed them both, but given the choice, we chose hard- all. The Montreal Royals played hardball. Their parent team, the Brooklyn Dodgers, played hardball and of course all of us kids envisaged a future as ball players like Duke Snider, Preacher Roe, Jackie Robinson, whoever. Those that were good at soft- ball were good at hardball and vice versa. I would be great to give hard- ball a chance locally. It pleases me that a facility is being pre- pared. - The Jays play hardball and may be World Series bound. Most of us take in the game by radio, TV, newspaper or even go to the game if lucky enough to have tickets. Obvi- ously the interest exists. Isn't it curious that the term "Let's play hardball" currently means "Let's get serious." Seriously, Ralph M. Price Coalition not using candidate profile To the Editor: An explanation is required on last week's "Taxpayers' Coa- lition unveils candidate profile questionnaire" article. The candidate profile was de- veloped by the Ontario Coali- tion for use by local groups if they want to. Scugog Taxpayers Coalition has decided not to use the pro- file. We believe it to be a good idea that needs further devel- opment, but at the present time itis toointrusive and too long. Taxpayers Coalition Scugog will not be using the profile. Sincerely, David Frew Chairman Fascinating newspaper To the Editor: Congratulations on your 125th anniversary edition; what a fascinating, informa- tive, and thought-provoking newspaper! I was one of the for- tunate people who attended the Lake Scugog Historical So- ciety meeting last Thursday to hear Peter Hvidsten talk about the history of your newspaper, and received an advance copy of the special edition. kkk %k% 8, %* kk kk \. 4 Stonemoor ) (7 ¢ Car, Genet?
