"A Family Tradition for 125 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, October 22, 1991 - 11 Saturday was Apple Day In Scugog Township. Beavers, Five initiatives outlined From Page § and yard material composting, and controlled composting. Under the recycling section, the initiatives attempt to "facil- itate the establishment of cer- tain key types of recycling sites by clarifying and streamlining the current approvals process under the Environmental Pro- tection Act." The new regulations provide a newer system of classification of recycling sites, and more im- portantly outlines materials which can be source separated. These include aluminum, brick and concrete, drywall, ferrous materials, fine paper, glass newsprint, corrugated card- board, and wood. The paper has also intro- duced regulations which re- quire industries, commercial operations, and institutions to conduct thorough audits of their waste generation, and to prepare a workplan for waste reduction. It must also be avail- able for inspection. Scout Apple Day story We're sure some of you must wonder as each Apple Day in Scouting comes around, how it all began. Well, we would like to pass on the story to you. In 1936, two scouters in the Toronto area wondered how to thank the community for their support of Scouting. The idea conceived over 50 years ago, was the first Apple Day. Apples were purchased by the two scouters and their scouts, who gave them away as a 'thank you'. Since then, Apple Day has grown throughout Ontario and into other provinces. There is also the added fundraising as- pect whereby donations are ac- cepted. However, the intent of Apple Day remains the same. Apple Day is still Scouting's op- portunity to thank the commu- nity for their support. The Ist Scugog (Manchester) beavers, cubs, scouts, leaders and group committee would like to thank the Prince Albert community and the north end of Port Perry community for their support of scouting. All municipalities with popu- lations of more than 5,000 peo- ple will be required to ensure that source separations pro- grams are available by July 31, 1992. The ministry believes it is possible, with recycling, to di- vert up to 14 per cent of the resi- dential waste from landfill. Un- der the new regulations approximately 93 per cent of Ontario households will be ser- viced by recycling programs. As of June, 1991, only 55 per cent are serviced. The municipalities will be re- quired to provide for the collec- tion, handling and storage of the materials, the preparation of the materials, and to educate the citizens on the program. The municipalities that cur- rently collect leaf and yard ma- ho will be required to estab- lish community composting facilities. As with other waste reduc- tion initiatives, the minister's office is inviting public input into the work. Mrs. Grier said she is inviting input over the next two months and will im- plement the regulations in mid- 2. Cubs and Scouts were out in full force selling apples to raise funds for their program.
