Tt pp C-- TT -- ea I IN A Et ah cr Po 10 - PORT PERRY STAR - Real Estate Section - Tuesday, October 22 1991 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Congratulations to our own Laura Phoenix and to Heather McLean. The physical educa- tion staff of Port Perry High School recognized the two stu- dents for their outstanding ef- forts in organizing the special sports events. We must praise our youth for their "good achievements." We hear too much of their failures. The October meeting of the Women's Institude was held at the beautiful home of Iva and Fred Phoenix last Wednesday. The lovely surroundings were in keeping with the Theme of the Day - Trees. Mr. Tom Farmer from the Department of Natural Re- sources was the guest speaker. He gave us a detailed explana- tion of the life and growth of the Tree. He also explained how very much we need our trees and how we should care and protect them. He answered many interest- ing guestions. First and fore- most, on how a tree needs to be fed and cared for. Eunice Rahm thanked Mr. Farmer and he presented each mem- ber with a tree to plant, the white pine, Ontario's own tree. Iva and Eunice both had in- teresting readings, featuring trees. Mrs. Couperthwaite our president chaired the meeting. The roll call "Name a Tree and Its Use" brought many differ- ent answers - the beech, ma- ple, ash, ironwood, oak, cedar, pine, olive and mahogany we saw in Caracas in South America. A motion was made and car- ried to plant a tree in our cem- etry. This tree is to be a dona- tion from the Phoenix Family farm from a grove of pine trees they own. Our two guests, Diane Stone and Noreen Beck enjoyed the afternoon with us. We do need the younger women to help us in our organization, the W.I. Judy and Jim Gibson mo- tored to Chelsey, Nova Scotia. They visited with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ingram Gill- more. On their way there, they travelled around the Ca- bot Trail. Judy said the scen- ery was so beautiful in all the fall colors. The Arthritis Society's an- nual fund-raising campaign was a big success this year! There were more canvassers than ever before. More money was raised as well. Many thanks from the local c¢ym- paign chairman to both the volunteers who did such a great job and to the communi- ty for their generous dona- tions. Welcomed guests with Ra- chel and Armour McMillan were, Mrs. Martha Baird and Mrs. Nancy Kidd, Marion Innes and Armour's niece No- reen and Bob Snodden. Also his niece Grace Nicholls and husband Ken of Whitby. We are all anxious over Ra- chel's health. Everyone who knows this kind and gracious lady will keep her in our prayers as she is staying in Princess Margaret Hospital this week. We won't forget to keep an eye on Armour too! Helen and Don McKean vis- ited with John and Mary Gra- ham on Friday in Locust Hill. The occasion being John's 90th birthday. The First Greenbank Guide Troop spent the weekend at Camp Samac. They enjoyed outdoor cooking and adopted a tree and worked on their Fo- restry Badge and Conserva- tionist Badge. Fourteen girls reported they had a super weekend with their leaders Mrs. Shepherd, Jan Robinson and Dot Hooker. The Music Committee of Greenbank Church gratefully acknowledges several more do- nations to the organ fund over the summer. Included are In Memoriams and Ruby Beare's birthday gift. Thanks to all who have helped the friend grow to $13,881! Parents invited to join in the fun at Greenbank children's Halloween party Two bridal showers were held recently in honor of Alli- son Harriman, fiance of Tre- vor Till. Janice Lee and Julie Till were co-hostesses when family and Marsh Hill neigh- bors gathered at Brian and Janice's home for a miscella- neous shower on Oct. 9. Then Allison's sister Julie and Howard Lee held a kitch- en and linen shower on Sun- day Oct. 20 in their home in Oshawa. The wedding will be on Nov. 2.
