A Family Tradition for 125 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Real Estate Section - Tuesday, October 22 1991 - 11 Scugog Island W.l. news By Clara Dowson Wednesday evening Oct. 17 the Scugog Island Women's In- stitute met at the Community Hall. Thirteen members an- swered the Roll Call. Mary Ostrom chaired the meeting in the absence of our President Penny Pettypiece. Mary opened the meting by singing Opening Ode and re- peating the Institute Creed. The minutes of the last meet- ing were read and approved. Treasurer gave a favorable report. All seemed pleased with the result of ticket sales on the $500 draw, drawn at the Port Perry Fair. Helen Martyn of Blackstock was the winner. It was suggested to have some of our small table tops re- paired Betty Reader read a most in- teresting letter from Lilo Czi- lok, who last summer moved to Sidney B.C, and they are hap- py and enjoying their sur- roundings. Betty Reader will be the delegate at the Conven- tion at the Royal York in No- vember. The meeting closed by sing- ing O Canada with Connie Haight on piano. The convenor for Agriculture Canadian Industries then took over. Roll Call was answered by naming "your favorite use of an apple." Motto was given by Bonnie Gerrow. "Old Apple Pie" was sung to the tune of "In the Shade of the Old Apple Tree." Our guest speaker was one of our members, Carol Fagel, who is qualified to tell you all about apples. Her talk was very interesting, and believe it, there's a lot more work in- volved from producer to buyer than just walking in a store and picking up a nice basket of apples. That late third storm played havoc on their crop this year. Like all aspects of farm- ing, weather playes a major part. Connie Haight thanked Car- ol for her talk, a small token of appreciation was presented to her. Lunch consisted of mainly apples -- apple pie, apple crisp and apple cinnamon coffee cake with cheese, grapes, mel- on, tea and coffee. Please all come out for the Nov. meeting -- our Christmas meeting -- exchange of home- made gifts. Convenor Joan Morris will be expecting a full house.
