In conversation at the wake service with a dear friend of her's, I remarked, "she was a clown for God." Her friend looked at me with tear- drenched eyes and replied, "in- deed, she was; such a loving person!" The clowns are not the great centre of events in a circus. They appear between the great acts, fumble and fall and make us smile again after the ten- sions created by the heroes we came to admire. The clowns don't have it to- gether, they do not succeed in what they try, they are awk- ward, out of balance, left- handed, but .. they are on our side. We respond to them not with admiration but with em- pathy, not with amazement ut understanding, not with tension but with a smile. Of the acrobats we say: "How can they do it!" Of the clowns we say: "They are like us." The clowns remind us with a tear and smile that we are sharing the same human weakness. Such a person was Louise Hartney. She encountered the dark side of life -- whether it was loneliness in a retirement home, the fear associated with a pending operation or the de- spair encountered with the limitations of aging or termi- nal illness -- with that ever- engaging smile which awak- ened a sense of hope to those Donate to UNICEF on To the Editor: Forty thousand children in the world die every day because of "ordinary malnutrition and disease". It's easy to sit around gnashingour teeth over the ina- bility of politicians to eradicate the problems that kill so many children, but there are much more practical things "ordi-: nary" people can do. At Hallowe'en we can donate change to the trick or treaters who come to our doors. At schools which do not take partin the Hallowe'en box- es program, we can help get one going. But there is even more we could do! We could develop the habit of collecting change during Hallowe'en week, not just through Unicef boxes, but wherever we are. Offices, banks, restaurants-any place could put out a jar for dona- tions. Hallowe'en parties or dances could painlessly raise funds with people's spare change too. Canadians complain that our standard of living is eroding, but many of us are still willing on the receiving end. I write this tribute out of a spirit of gratitude that your life touched mine and those of my deceased wife and mother. You reminded me and countless others you encountered with your humor and compassion of that eternal truth .. it's OK to be human and that God can write straight on crooked lines. To her little flock of intimate friends, affectionately known by the alias 'bandits', fesling the deep pain of her absence, say, "take up the mask and keep clowning" .. the tribute I believe Louise would best ap- preciate. Larry Corrigan former Deacon Immaculate Conception Church Port Perry Hallowe'en to spare a few loonies, quarters, or dimes if we know we are helping to save lives and maybe even to help "change the world." The only work involved is the effort it takes to put out a jar and later to roll the change (in- viting a few friends over to visit with while doing this makesit a lot more pleasant!) Unicef works miracles with very small amounts of money, and our efforts can help so much. The Unicef Ontario staff (333 Eglinton Ave. East in To- ronto, phone 487-4153) will, I'm sure, be only too happy to ac- cept our donations. Sincerely, Janet Banting Greenbank, Ontario Patients losing patience To the Editor: I am starting my letter with a thank you to Mr. Steve Lance of Vista Care Sterivision TV Company, who sees the needs of the patients of the second floor of the Whitby General Hospital. Also thanks to Diane, a representative for the TV Company who tries to please the patients when the TV re- SSphion is terrible (or none at all). The patients are paying a high rate and should get 10 channels -- sometimes they are lucky to get two or three. Long- term patients should be al- lowed to have their own TVs and pay a reasonable monthly rate. Cable should be put in. Who is holding up the cable? The hospital or the TV Compa- ny? When I see how hard it is for the patients and the nurses to shower them, wearing boots to protect the nurses' shoes, I have asked three different peo- ple about getting information on a Century Tub that might be donated but I have never got any response. There are a lot of volunteers who pay their dues and say "I am a volunteer at Whitby Gen- eral Hospital" but where are they when so many patients need to be fed? Or for reading or talking to them, etc. -- one hour or 30 minutes to feed them. The air conditioning and heating system is so out-dated, it was terrible during our hot, humid weather this summer. If there are no funds for what the patients need, especially on the second floor, where is the mon- Turn to Page 9 EMMERSON INSURANCE BROKERS LIMITED 193 QUEEN ST., PORT PERRY, ONT.
