a "A Family Tradition for 125 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, October 29, 1991 - 11 By Scott Anderson "Like mother, like daughter" is what a lot people must be say- ing after learning that Dr. Reva Bathie has been honored with an award from the Sacro Occip- ital Research Society Interna- tional (SORSI). Dr. Bathie, a well-known chi- ropractor who practices in Port Perry, was honored with the Chiropractor of the Year Award by SORSI at a recent meeting in Omaha, Nebraska. Dr. Bathie, along with her mother, Dr. Helen Peel, practic- es a specialized form of chirop- rody called Sacro Occipital Treatment (S.0.T.). This specialized treatment, which only a handful of doctors in Canada practice, involves us- Some candidates left speechless A misunderstanding con- cerning the format of the all- candidates meeting left some of the political hopefuls speech- less. The problem stemmed from an apparent lack of communi- cation in the days and hours leading up to the event. According to Joel Aldred, the moderator, all the candidates were told they would have "up to two minutes" to address the audience in the first half of the three-hour event. But some in- terpreted this as meaning they would have to speak for two minutes. Others had heard that they wouldn't be speaking atall. A quick huddle with all the participants was called min- utes before the beginning of the meeting. Mr. Aldred asked them if they would allow the mayoral and regional councillor repre- sentatives four minutes to speak, bypassing the other can- didates until the question and answer period. This was quick- PAINT & WALLPAPER 1 Douglas Road (Bank of Nova Scotia Plaza) Uxbridge 852-5315 (formerly Color Your World under same management) @ PARA ly shot down, however. The format finally agreed on was that each candidate would speak for two minutes, and would be cut off at exactly two minutes. Three candidates, Jim Tow- er, John Abbott, Ward 3 candi- dates, and Neil McLaughlin, Ward 4, chose not to speak opt- ing to particpate in the ques- tion period. Mr. Aldred accepted part of the blame for the confusion claiming that he wasn't clear in stressing the point of "up to two minutes." Mr. Tower and Mr. Abbott were centred out during the question period and asked why they didn't speak when given the opportunity. They blamed the format change and pointed to the misunderstanding in not preparing a speech. Mr. Tower suggested there was enough repetition in the speeches and feared that he would have only contributed more. PAINTS & COATINGS Buy 1 pair of shoes/boots & get 1 pair of L.A. According to Dr. Bathie, no real force is used as the patient's weight deter- mines how much pressure is ap- plied. Dr. Bathie says this pain-free method "takes away the stig- matism of the old back crunch- er. "Once a person realizes it's not a traumatic experience, they tend to accept it better," she says. Using this technique, any part of the body can be treated, Dr. Bathie says. During her 10 years experience she has treat- ed many different areas of the body from all parts of the back and neck to sinuses, as well as internal organs. Dr. Bathie says "the most re- warding experiences" are those involving the cranal technique. This technique is particularily crucial asitis treating the skull where 80 per cent of the ner- vous system is located. Often the technique requires a shap- ing of the skull. It is the cranal technique that first attracted Dr. Bathie to study chiropody, and more specifically S.O.T. She was studying to become an engineer at the time, but witnessed a demonstration in which she ac- tually saw a mentally retarded girl "change" when treated by S.0.T. It was at this point that she decided to dedicate her life tothe technique. One of the most rewarding cases Dr. Bathie says she has worked on regarded a young girl who was developing beyond her age due to a problem with her pituitary sytem. But with the use of S.0.T., Dr. Bathie was able to slow her system down, and she now enjoys a nor- mal life. The mother and daughter team of Dr. Bathie and Dr. Peel practice from their second floor clinic on Casimir Street in Port Perry, but are known through- - out the world for the work which they do. They have pa- tients that come from all over the world for treatment. They have also been honored for their work on numerous oc- casions by the medical profes- sion. Aside from the Chiroprac- tor of the Year Award, Dr. Bathie and Dr. Peel took home five awards in appreciation for their years of service. Dr. Peel has served on the board of di- rectors in the past and has re- ceived many awards, including the Presidential Appreciation Award at this year's meeting. Dr. Bathie has served on the board of directors for six years. Dr. Bathie has been quite in- volved with the organization and representing the technique over the years. She has written four manuals and provides teaching assistance for the technique. She also conducts a number of lectures each year.
