"If you don't know much about antiques, deal with a dealer who has been in the business for a long time," said Patricia Price, a local antique dealer. Mrs. Price has been an avid collector of antiques for 26 years. She deals in mid 19th century furniture and accessories, as well as crockery and naive art. Bob Collins of Nods and Nends in Whitby agreed with Mrs. Price's sentiments. "(A first-time buyer) should look for an honest dealer to make sure you are getting what you are being told you are buying," he said. Mr. Collins deals in many varieties of antiques including furniture, primitives, and other small collectibles. He also does restoration and reconditioning. Tally Ho owner, Faye Owens stresses that customers must find a reputable dealer to assure they are certain of being told what is genuine and what is a reproduction. Tally Ho, located on Water Street in Port Perry, deals in British antiques such as furniture, china and jewelry. Attending antique shows and subscribing to antique magazines are also good ways to become educated on Manchester RR#4, Port Perry, Ont. Mrs. Price stated that by attending shows, potential customers can get a feel for prices, which are not always higher at shows. Sharon Young of Country Heirlooms on Queen Street in Port Perry also recommends shows and magazines to potential buyers as a way of learning about antiques. Country Heirlooms specializes in Canadiana antiques, primarily pine pieces. They carry a line of authentic reproductions. They also deal in wooden animals, antique prints, vintage collectibles, and flower arranging. TR NE a call ahead is advisable (416) 985-7644 (60 mins. "First customers should decide if the piece is going to be useful," said Mrs. Young. And before coming to buy, they should bring the measurements of the space they want the antique to fit into, she added. Merle Heintzman of The Front Room, in Blackstock believes customers should buy whatever appeals to them. : The Front Room has antiques ranging from furniture and primitives to glass, china and small collectibles. The Front Room also does refinishing on wooden furniture. Investment is an important part of antique collecting and almost any antique is said to be an investment. "Any antique is an investment, some better than others, but I can't think of anything that doesn't appreciate," said Mrs. Owens. "Antiques always increase in value, where as new furniture decreases," said Mrs. Young. While investment is an important part of antiques Mrs. Price states it should not be the only reason for collecting. "(You) should get enjoyment out of living with what you buy. You should buy what you like and if it increases in value then that is a bonus." "The pleasure of owning an antique is worth something and not always in investment terms. Investment is important to some, but I don't think it should be the sole criteria for collecting," Mrs. Price said. Furniture, glass, china and small collectibles are only a few of the ways to appreciate older wares. Nancy Sanderson of The Dressmaker in Brooklin deals in cloth restoration. The Dressmaker is a repair and alteration shop which does renewals, renovations and refurbishes older clothing. "Older fabrics are beautiful and better woven. I use the cloth and make it into clothing that is worn today," she said. Different types of antiques tend to sell better than others as fads come and go. Country Victorian furniture is a good seller, said Donna Coppins of Uniquely Designed Flower and Gift Shop. Uniquely Designed is located in Sunderland and sells local handcrafted gifts, victorian Christmas displays, folk art, and dry flower arrangements on a consignment basis.
