18 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, October 29, 1991 a i ape ub "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Tricks and treats for kids during high school Port Perry High School got into the spirit Thwsda) when it hosted a day-long Hallowe'en fest for public school students. Spookarama featured both tricks and treats, along with some very valuable Hallowe'en safety tips from Durham Re- gion police officer Peter Wraight. "Hallowe'en is a time when you are suppose to have fun," PC Wraight told the public school students. "But like any- thing else, there are rules in- volved. If you get hurt, that's the end of your fun." Although costumes are fun, they are one of the main causes of injuries on Hallowe'en night, he said. PC Wraight stressed that costumes should be light in col- or so motorists can see the chil- dren. Darker costumes should have strips of reflective tape on them. Keep costumes short and tailored, the officer said. In the excitement of Hallowe'en, chil- dren are more apt to trip if they are wearing a long, floppy cos- tume. Face painting with make up is the best idea. If a child insists on wearing a mask, parents should make the holes around the eyes bigger, PC Wraight said. He told the children to trick or treat in groups or with an adult. "Don't go out by yourself," he warned. "Take a grown up with you. The best grown up would be momordad." If the child's parents are un- able to escort him, the child should ask his parents who a suitable escort would be, PC Wraight said. Children should tell their parents what route they will be taking and what time they will be home, he said. Parents should check the treats before the children eat them. : "Have a good meal before you go out and you won't be tempt- ed to eat your candies before you get home," he told the chil- dren. Wraight said there are people they can turn to such as Block Parents and police officers. "Try to make it a safe Hal- lowe'en," he said. "Have fun, but doit the right way." PPHS theatre students per- formed a short skit to reinforce the safety measures. After the review of safety rules, the public school stu- dents were treated to a magic show by PPHS student Peter Loughlin. Peter picked stu- dents from the audience to help him with several of his acts. The public school students were then taken on a trip through a haunted house where they received treats and Port Perry High School student Peter Loughran performed participated in Hallowe'en games. More than 900 students en- joyed the day-long event which was split into four one-hour performances. Port Perry High School would like to thank the local sponsors who contributed to the event. Gavin's Ninja Turtle costume is neat, but the mask makes it difficult to see when walking.
