"A Fality Tradition for 125 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, October 29, 1991 - 39 Pee Wee Bs excite fans at Ops tournament The Pee Wee "B's" travelled to Ops for their first tourna- ment of the season and de- lighted the fans with a very exciting first game against a very tough Omemee team. The game went into over- XL comeback falls short as they lose 8-5 The XL Gas Bar Eaglettes travelled to Richmond Hill Sun- day, Miranda Burgess quickly opened the scoring for Port at the end of the first shift assist- ed by Alaina Burger. The Eaglettes lead disap- peared in short order as Rich- mond Hill netted two quick goals, 19 seconds apart three minutes later. Melissa Hooker's unassisted goal drew Port close after Rich- mond Hill had extended their lead. Port Perry seemed to be one step behind as the Eaglettes had trouble getting the score evened up. Facing an onslaught of shots during the game, Alicia Burgess allowed Port the op- portunity to attempt a second period comeback. Melissa started the come- back as she notched her second of the game assisted by Alaina Davis. Miranda scored her sec- ond, this from Melissa reducing Richmond Hill's lead to 7-4. Leanne Layzell set up Alaina Davis on a breakaway for Alai- na's first ever goal. The come- back was snuffed out with two minutes left in the game as Richmond Hill stretched the lead to 8-5. Continued good effort will pay off girls as we gain experi- ence. After six minutes of play and a lot of very tired hockey players, Omemee finally put the puck in the net after a ma- Jor scramble in front of the goal crease. This was a very tough loss to take after Port going ahead 3-1, but with only 1:47 min- utes to go in the game Ome- mee pulled their goal tender for the extra man and with a great effort tied it up with two fast goals to force overtime. Shane Norton had a great game with the hat trick for Port with two assists going to Justin Halligan and one assist to Danny Robinson and Bobby Cracknell. The entire defence of Crack- nell, Laird, Smith, Gracie and Baxter did a fine job defending against Omemee with all for- ward lines playing sound two way hockey, particularly Shanley, Robinson, Strikert and Gray. Brad Shanley was presented with the M.V.P. for the Port Perry team for the tourna- ment. GAME #2 OPS TOURNA- MENT Port Perry Pee Wee B's started off flat-footed playing a very large fast skating Ops team and it wasn't very long before Ops put the puck be- tween Kent Johnston's legs as he was going down in a scram- ble in front of his net. Then two minutes later they fol- lowed up with a second after heavy hitting play in Ports end. Thirty seconds later, they 7Ared their third goal on a screen shot from twenty feet out from the net. Unfortunately, a missed off- side play resulted in their fourth goal that really put the Port guys behind the eight ball. They never gave up and picked up the pace in the sec- ond period. Danny Robinsons line had numerous chances in their pe- riod but could not beat the strong goal tending at the oth- er end. The other Port Perry lines finally got on track but again, no one could beat their goalie. At 3:40 of the second period, Ops won the face off and went ahead on their fifth goal with the sixth coming 30 seconds later. This really put the game out of sight but Port kept com- ing back only to be stopped again. Port came close in the third period with a fine effort by Aa- ron Levy that resulted in a big rebound that Brad Shanley fired back at the net. Once again, Ops big goalie robbed them of a badly needed goal. Everyone on the Port team gave it their best throughout a very fast and hard hitting game but Ops was just too much for them to handle to- day. This proved to be a good learning experience for the Port Perry team; first tourna- ment of the year. Port Perry Pee Wee "B's" travelled to Lindsay for their first meeting of the season and the Lindsay team came out Port Perry Petites in fine shape Two weeks into the season, the Coldwell Banker Petites sport a 2-0 record. The first game of the season saw the Country Lane girls dominate a Markham 11 team 10-1. Pam Hiltz and Jennifer Elli- ott proved that they haven't lost the scoring touch, each notching hat tricks. Cathy Cooper in her first year of rin- gette set up two goals. The re- mainder of the scoring was shared between Leanne Holt, PUBLIC AUCTION SIU IBY: N EN [OAS VIS] S ECHR RCI ODDFELLOWS HALL 14460 SIMCOE STREET NORTH PREVIEW 12 NOON « SALE 1 P.M. Diane Vander- ligt played a superb game in net, stopping numerous Mark- ham shots. Four of these girls played their first ringette game. With the smiles they wore and their determined efforts, these new players are a welcome addi- tion to our team. Jennifer Im- rie and Lauren Christie played well on defence. Cathy Cooper and Lisa LeFort con- tributed to our offense. Jennifer Hammond's aggres- sive play was not unnoticed and we're sure the ring will start to go into the net soon. Janna Senyk and Brooke Shanley's defensive expertise provides this team with great leadership. The second win or the sea- son came against Richmond Hill. Diane Vanderligt led the attack with three goals and an assist. Congratulations to Brooke Shanley who scored her first goal! Brooke has played red stick during her ca- reer and her fine checking has prevented perhaps 100 goals. Our white sticks, Jennifer Elliott, Janine Hammond and Pam Hiltz passed unselfishly setting up goals by Leanne Holt and Jennifer Donnelly. Lauren Christie's debut in goal was perfect with a daz- zling save in the final seconds to preserve the shut out. hitting everybody but some good hits by Wooten, Gray, Shanley and Cracknel showed them that Port could play a rough game as well. Both teams played very cau- tiously until the final minute of play in the first period when Lindsay raced in on the left wing with a hard high shot that Shrigley stopped but fell back into the net along with the loose puck and Lindsay's first goal. The second period started off with some fast action by both sides along with more heavy hitting resulting in matching penalties after three minutes of play. Unfortunate- ly for Port, Lindsay scored again having that extra ice surface open to set up a great play. Midway through the pe- riod, Port had two men in the penalty box to Lindsay's one but some strong defensive work by Laird, Gracie, Smith and Levy kept the Lindsay team from getting any good shots away. Port had some great chances with Lindsay two men short and three min- utes to go in the period with one hard shot from Kevin Grays stick off the Lindsay goalies mask but Port could not finish their plays. Port Perry started the third period with a man advantage. It didn't take them long to put it in the net on a goal by Ja- mie Strickert, assisted by Kristen Wooten and Trevor Smith, Lindsay put on the pressure with five or six shots at our net but some great goaltend- ing by Paul Shrigley kept our guys in the game. Finally on a combination effort of Jason Hopkins and Aaron Levy breaking across Lindsay's blueline, Port got their second goal from Jason with assists going to Levy and Brad Shan- ley. Port earned a well deserved tie after coming behind a two goal deficit. Great game guys. All at Guaranteed Lowest Prices UNITED CARPET.
