FAX (416) 985-3708 3 ALL DAY/NIGHT SERVICE AJ As fraternal twins, our kids Kyle and Belinda have al- ways had a heck of a lot of fun playing tricks - especially at Hallowe'en. Em and I have had just as much fun whipping up various costumes for them over the years, and I'll never forget the time they went as Tweedledum and Tweedledee, or the following year as peas in a pod. Now that they're much too "old" to go trick-or treating, this year Belinda is go- ing to a party as the Bride of Frankenstein, and Kyle is go- ing to the same party as Igor. Anyway, on to more serious matters. A while back I prom- ised to dig up some more information on ground fault circuit interupters. - GFCI's. I've mentioned them a couple times, but never really gone into detail about them. If you've never heard of them 14. win you might be interested. "Ground fault circuit interrupter" is a heck of a long name for something that the Hydro says can give you and your family almost instant protection from a potentially fatal electric shock from electric tools for appliances. You install them wherever you've got moisture in or around your home - for example, outdoors, in bathrooms, laundry rooms or work shops. In fact, GFCI receptacles are now required by the Electri- cal Safety Code for new electrical installations around swimming pools and for all residential bathrooms and out- door outlets in new0 homes. A ground fault in an electrical circuit lets electrial current flow from the live wire to the ground. You can get a fault from worn insulation, moisture, or an old or defective tool. What happens is this: when electrical current escapes through, say, a faulty tool, it seeks the path of least resis- tance to the ground. If the person who's using or touching the faulty tool is standing in a damp location, he becomes a good "path" for the electricity to follow to the ground, and can be injured or killed. A ground fault circuit interrupter receptacle will sense, almost instantly, an electrical ground fault, and interrupt the flow of electricity before someone is hurt. Gotta go - Igor just slithered into the basement, wringing his hands, to tell me that the Bride of Frankenstein needs some last minute assemble. I think I liked Tweedledum and Tweedledee a lot better! 2, y/ 2, 7 * kx This newspaper, in conjunction with Ontario Hydro, is bringing you Phil's Basement to help "bring home" ideas on how to save energy.
