12 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, November 26, 1991 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Candidate inconsistent committee director says To the Editor: It is difficult to answer a letter like the one written by Andy An- drews in your last issue of the Port Perry Star. He makes asser- tions without proof and resorts to insult and invective in place of reasoned argument. Mr. Andrews was consistent in his opposition to the position of the Committee of Concerned Citizens of Marsh Hill on the proposed Engineers' Training School in Ward 1, until he was invited to speak to us as a candidate in the recent election. When he met with our committee he stated, in front of our 12-member executive that he had re-thought his opposition, and was now in full agreement with the position of our commit- tee on the importance of preserv- ing the environment. It is in- teresting to note that he treated our committee members with respect, as a prospective coun- cillor and is now attacking us as a defeated candidate. His erratic behavior makes it self-evident that our committee was correct in not recommending his election. Nobody likes a poor loser. David J. Tasker Director Committee of Concerned Citizens of Marsh Hill Letters io the editor Mail out "accurate and informative" To the Editor: The story in last week's paper of Mr. Kirkham's fury re- garding the "abortion-related material" coming to his door in- trigued me. I found the booklet to be very accurate and informative; inge- niously put together, making us aware as to what is really go- ing on everyday in hospitals and abortuaries across our country. If Mr. Kirkham finds this of- fensive then maybe he should FREE INVESTMENT WORKSHOP s GICs =CSBs = T-Bills = Mutual Funds = Stocks » Bonds = Options "*MBSs = RRIFs sRESPs sStrips "Gold & Cdn. $ Money doesn't grow on trees. The abortion question seems to be "How human are we?" Doctors tell us that only 26 days after conception, the baby's heart is already beating. By the sixth week brain activity can be measured. By the ninth week the child can make a tiny fist, get hiccups and suck his or her thumb. By the eleventh week all organs are functional. The baby inhales and exhales, swal- lows and digests. A baby doesn't just suddenly come to life at birth. He is al- ready alive in his mother before birth. So how can anyone say that an unborn baby is not a hu- man life? Yet every eight min- utes a life is snuffed out on the abortion tables in Canada, or burnt out as a saline solution washes over his tiny body or he could be pulled apart limb from limb then disgarded like gar- bage into bags. We call it intra- uterine dismemberment. Abortion is big business, big money. To some doctors abor- tion is their only business. These are "hired assassins." How human are we? A centu- ry ago the black man was con- sidered a non-person. We look back with pride at those who stood against this evil and are ashamed of those who did not. As Martin Luther King once said of his generation, the same would have to be said of ours, "History will have to record that the greatest tragedy of this period of social transition was not the vitriolic words and the violent actions of the bad people but the appalling silence and indifference of th people. Our generation will have to re- pent not only for the words and acts of the children of darkness but also for the fears and apa- thy of the children of light." ut I also believe, as King says, "There are miilions of peo- ple of good will whose voices are yet unheard, whose course is yet unclear and whose coura- geous acts are yet unseen. These millions are called upon to gird their courage to speak. out and to offer leadership that isneeded." Although I am not a member of the Baptist Church, I ap- plaud their efforts on behalf of the children. Poor little one; who was it took your breath? Who made the healer's hands a thingof death? Who was your Judas? Moth- er? Doctor? State? Or was it we who fought your cause too late? He has no cradle, cross, no grave, no tomb, This baby crucified inside the womb.
