"A Family Tradition for 125 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Monday, December 30, 1991 - 23 Twelve points ahead of closest rivals ModJacks defeat Merchants to increase their hold on first place By Al Bailey Port Perry MoJacks con- tinue to play well this season in the Ontario Hockey Associ- ation Central Junior 'C' league and are firmly entrenched in first place, 12 points ahead of their closest rivals, Cobourg Cougars and Bowmanville Ea. gles who are tied for second. A week ago Sunday the Mo- Jacks hosted the Little Britain Merchants for their annual family Christmas night. A good crowd was on hand to watch the ModJacks win an- other close game by a 7-5 score, the clincher coming with just one second left on the clock as Brad Menzies fired the puck into the empty net. Clair Cornish led the Port Perry scoring attack with two goals and an assist. Mark McKay and Mike Coulson had a goal and two assists each, and Kevin Bagshaw, and Jim Vernon added a goal apiece. Little Britain goals were scored by Jeff Adams, Dave Holliday, Jeff Budden, Steve Roberts and Steve Trumball. The MoJacks jumped out in front for a 4-2 lead after the first period. But the Mer- chants retaliated in the second with two unanswered tallies to Canadian Tire Islanders defeat Fenelon Falls 3-0 The Port Perry Canadian Tire Islanders hosted the team from Fenelon Falls on Wednesday, Dec. 18. The home team took a one goal lead early in the first period on a real team effort. Mi- chael Williams dug the puck out from behind the net, passed to Todd Smart and Corey Wilson was there to bang in the re- bound from Todd's shot. Rick Hutchinson played well in net, preserving the lead. In the early part of the second period the next goal was a beautiful three-way passing play on a three-on- one. Scott Airey scored assist- ed by Darryl Vanderligt and Mark Cosway. The great puck control demonstrated by the strong defense resulted in the third goal in the last period. Darrel Vander Slagt and Simon Traynor worked the puck looking for a good op- portunity and Steven De- sautels was there to flip in the rebound. Final score was 3-0. tie up the match. The Port squad was leading by just a goal near the end of Clair Cornish Led ModJack Scoring attack against Merchants Sunday night with two goals and one assist regulation play in the third when the Little Britain goal- tender was lifted in favor of an extra forward to try and score the equalizer. But as is so of- ten the case, the ploy back- fired. : Marc Dekker, in goal for the MoJacks, looked a bit rusty af- ter a week's layoff in the early going of the contest, but his confidence and timing im- proved considerably as the game wore on. Only 30 minutes worth of penalties were assessed to the MoJacks and 18 minutes to the Merchants in this cleanly- contested match. The Modacks played the Bowmanville Eagles this past Sunday night at home, but be- cause of our early holiday pub- lishing schedule, we'll have the report on this game next week. Also coming up on Jan. 11 is 'the league's All-Star Game to be played this year in Co- bourg. The MoJacks, being the first-place team after 14 games, will face an all-star line-up of players from Co- bourg, Bowmanville, Little Britain, Uxbridge and Lake- field. Malmont Atoms lose close one in Uxbridge Still on their three game road trip, the Malmont Atom As took their travelling show into the Uxbridge Arena to take on Uxbridge on their home ice. The first period started out slowly with both teams feeling each other out and both goalies getting a slow warm-up, but each goalie made the big save when need- ed. With Port just having killed a penalty and both teams back playing full strength, Uxbridge split the Port defence and "look out Dina here comes Uxbridge" taking the early lead at 6:56 of the first period. Both teams traded rushes but the first pe- riod remained 1-0 for Ux- bridge. The second period was most- ly played in the neutral zone with both teams trying hard but not getting much going in the way of scoring power. Adam Hobbs, fresh up from the Atom B team, put on a pretty good show setting up plays and getting back to nul- lify any attack Uxbridge could muster. With the second peri- od winding down and 3:52 left, Port's Casey Van Schagen put a nice pass over to Adam Jones, in front of the net to Troy Campbell and "she's all tied up" at one a piece. With 45 seconds left in the second period, Uxbridge got a three way passing play going and snatched the lead back from Port to take a 2-1 lead to end the second period. The third period was back and forth with Port's Daniel Lee making some nice glove saves to keep the score at 2-1. Try as they might to tie the score again but Port just couldn't pull the rabbit out of the hat. The horn sounded to end the third period with the home town team coming away with a well deserved victory. The Malmont team would like to thank goalie Shane Savage, Ryan McQuade and Adam Hobbs from the Atom Bs for coming up to the A team and filling in the missing spaces in the teams roster and doing such a great job. Thanks guys. Remember boys: total team play, dedication and discipline is a combination hard to beat. Listen to your coaches and have fun. Team on its way to the Provincials? Allens Siding Tweens skate to exciting 5-3 victory over Oshawa WOW! What a game! Allen's Siding Products Tween As skated to a 5-3 victory over Oshawa on Sunday evening. This game definitely proved that this squad could quite possibly end up in Thunder Bay playing in the Provincial Championship later this sea- son. We knew you could do it girls! Katie Senyk was simply awesome between the pipes. Her quick reflexes were re- sponsible for many saves, most notably when she retali- ated on a break-away shot and deflected the ring off the top of her stick. Port played with only three girls on defense. This tough trio of Bonni-Jo Norton, Jenny Storms and Shona Moase to- tally frustrated the Oshawa offense. Barely anything got past them. Jenny made a su- per backcheck while Oshawa's Pam Anderson wound up on a break-away shot. Bonni-Jo al- ways ended up in the right spot to spoil a pass and cleared the ring saving many shots on Katie. Shona demon- strated her enormous strength and defense skills playing back for the first time this year. With the offense once again on track, they consistently made timely passes and accu- rate receptions. Port's first goal was scored by Cara Vand- er Slagt who found an unpro- tected corner. Laura Hooker and Lynda Payne set this goal up quite nicely. The balance of the game had see-saw scoring action. Brandy Harris' con- stant shots netted her a pair of goals. The first one was as- sisted by Cara and Lynda; the second by Lynda alone. If only that play could have been vid- eoed so that Lynda could have seen herself make the pass, her stick then went 10-15 feet into the air and then she land- ed on her tush! Excellent ef- fort Lynda on assisting all three goals. Congratulations girls on such a strong team effort. Me- lissa Pereman tried a new po- sition playing forward. No goals managed to be scored on Melissa or Dana Hooker's ef- forts this game. The Allen's Siding Products girls ended up in the penalty box for only a total of 10 minutes this game. Brandy and Jenny you did it. Neither one of you got a penal- ty! Y Excitement mounted at the 34 second mark when Oshawa tied the game. Walter Senyk explained a strategic plan of attack. It was Port's free pass, and Shona won the ring and headed for the net. Here, she met up with a mound of des- perate Oshawa players sprawled (including the goalie} grasping for Shona's stick. Freeing her stick, she flipped the ring in slow motion into the unprotected right corner breaking the tie unassisted. Port fans could barely cheer for laughing at this unusual shot. What a shot Shona! With 18 seconds remaining, Port stole the ring on Oshawa's free pass and Shona set Brandy up with a perfect pass. She foiled the goalie with a powerful shot to insure the win at the four second mark. This game was a won- derful team performance. On behalf of the girls and their parents, coaches Dianne Hooker and Roy Hooker wish to thank Walter Senyk for for- feiting time from his busy life to join the Allen's Siding Prod- ucts coaching trio. His proven coaching ability and experi- ence and admirable way with the girls will surely benefit this team immensely. We all look forward to the balance of the year and in particular meeting the highly competi- tive Sudbury and Gloucester teams in the Markham Tour- nament later this week. earned assists on the three Ivory Forest Juniors still undefeated in league play On Saturday, Dec. 21 the Mississauga Juniors played host to the Ivory Forest Juniors.
