Plans are underway for 12 hour Relay for Life at Port Perry fairground Plans are well underway for the 2008 Relay for Life, being held this year on Friday, June 13 at the Port Perry Fairgrounds. After a very successful event last year, organizers are hoping to raise in excess of $90,000 this year during the 12 hour event. Activities get underway with the opening ceremonies at 7 p.m. and will end at 7 a.m. the following morning. Relay For Life North Durham involves participants from Sun- derland, Cannington, Beaver- ton, Uxbridge and Port Perry. It's anticipated this year’s event will be bigger and better than ever. The evening will get under- way with the Survivors’ Victory Lap, where cancer survivors lead the way around the track as a celebration of their strength and courage. At dusk, the Luminary Cer- emony takes place - a very mov- ing part of the event with hun- dreds of candles, each bearing a message in memory of a loved one or in honour of a cancer sur- vivor, lighting the night. Teams camp out at the fair- ground and will be awarded prizes for top fundraiser, best campsite, best team spirit, best team flag as well as other spot prizes throughout the night. Each team member must pay aregistration fee of $10 and raise aminimum of $100 in pledges to participate in the event.
