Central to her meticulous compositions, showing from May 3-29, 2008, at the Kent Farndale Gallery in Port Perry, is the notion that in an age characterized by intentional forgetting and destruc- tion, we have an equally strong propensity to remember and con- serve the past. A keenly sensitive attention to detail and subtle colour palette are evident in her intricate shadow-box constructions and three- dimensional works, all of which demand the closest inspection, displaying as they do a mastery of assorted techniques that range from relief and silk-screen printing, hand and machine sewing to embroidery, drawing and writing. “Throughout my varied constructions, I use combinations of these processes to make diverse layers and parts incorporating paper, vintage textiles and other found materials,” says Valerie Knapp of her creations in her show “Reminiscence.” Ms. Knapp has led a varied career as a textile designer, profes- sor, teacher, lecturer, businesswoman and art, clothing and home accessories gallery owner/retailer. Toronto based, today she runs a thriving art and design practice and exhibits her unique works in an impressive number of private galleries and group and solo shows sponsored by, among oth- ers, the Textile Artists and Designers Association, Ontario Crafts Council Gallery, Canadian Embroiders Guild and Textile Museum of Canada. Her work is also available at Prime Gallery in Toronto. ‘or more information on this and upcoming shows at the Kent Farndale Gallery, please call 905-985-7686. Brown & Brethour Insurance Brokers Ltd.
