The cadets are active in the community where they are taught leadership, outdoor survival and self discipline skills. Each member also learns to read a map and a compass, some- thing I wish I had last week when my GPS ‘lost satellite sig- nal’ and I drove aimlessly around Scugog Island for hours. I wondered if being a cadet interfered with school and was pleased to learn the opposite. Port Perry High School is one of the sponsors of the corp and cadet teachings compliment a student's high school education. Thad to ask the question: “Are you expected to join the military when you graduate?” Mark’s answer was, “No. Less than one percent of Port Perry members join the military; however Opportunities are there for anyone who wishes to pursue those avenues.” The Port Perry Cadet Corp needs additional members. Right now the group is at twenty-five, but they would like to grow to forty members. Young people interested in joining are invited to come out any Wednesday evening to the Port Perry High School. The meetings start at 6:30 p.m., and bringing a parent or guardian to the initial meeting is a must. For more information call 905- 985-2080. Speaking with Captain Mark Hlozan and learning about the Canadian Cadet organization made me wish I was a teen- ager again. I would join without hesitation and take advan- tage of all the fun activities offered.
