Community dines ceards he recipients of the 2009 SCA Community in the Arts Awards were announced at a recent meeting of the scusos Council for the Arts annual general meeting held on Tuesday, April 28. The Community in the Arts Awards have been created by the Scugog Council for the Arts to promote aware- ness of the importance and economic benefits of arts and culture to the quality of life in Scugog. ‘hrough the awards program, the SCA is able to honour individuals and businesses that have made outstanding contributions to the vibrancy of the arts community in Scugog in the past year. This year, the awards categories have been expanded to include a young artist award. 2009 SCA Winners Business for the Arts Award - The Framer’s Gallery This award recognizes a business that has shown an exemplary spirit of in- vestment to the arts in Scugog. Tracey and Warren Strong of Framer’s Gallery have, over their many years of operation, consistently given their time and support to the artists, events and community organizations in Scugog. Kent Farndale Patron of the Arts Award - Jonathan van Bilsen In recognition of the overwhelming dedication to the arts shown by Kent Farn- dale, this award has been named in her honour and recognizes an individual who has shown an outstanding level of support to the arts in Scugog. The SCA wishes to recognize Jon’s contribution to local arts through his generosity and activity as a photographer, his involvement with the Kent Farndale Gallery and his recent creation of the North Durham Photographers Association. Artist for the Arts Award - Michele Jones The Artist for the a Award recognizes an individual artist who has shown not only in their own discipline but also in multiple areas oft ie arts throughout Scugog. Michele has been an integral part of Scugog’s theatre community as a performer, director, producer and director of Scugog Choral Society, Town Hall 1873 and ACT-CO. Through her vital contribution and role in Town Hall 1873's recent renovation, Michele has been instrumental in revitalizing a facility that benefits many arts disciplines and brings the community and its artists and heritage together. New Artist in the Community - Mallory McGrath iis award recognizes an artist who has newly established themselves in ity and has d. d a high level of support for the arts in a atltiny that time. The artist may literally be a new resident of Scugog or be newly practicing art in Scugog. Mallory has returned to Scugog after completing her music studies at McGill University and is quickly making her- self a part of the local cultural community, performing in and producing local musical theatre productions and by also producing fundraising concerts that not only benefit charities, but profile and showcase young musical talent. Young Artist in the Community - Kevin Drennan This award celebrates an outstanding young artist in any discipline and serves as a reminder that the potential and future of the arts will be realized by our youth. Kevin has demonstrated a huge talent and commitment within in his own field of music, and also to supporting the development and promotion of music in the community in such ways as acting as choral director, fundraiser, choir accompanist and providing free music concerts.
