Pond hockey came to Port Perry last month when 28 teams converged on five rink pads on Lake Scugog for a day of fun and fundraising. Frigid temperatures couldn't & cool enthusiasm for Scugog’ S first ever hockey challenge Sunny skies and temperatures dipping to a brisk -25C greeted more than 180 players, organizers and volunteers for Port Perry's inaugural pond hockey challenge on Saturday, January 30. The action got underway shortly after 8 a.m., with games taking place all day long on five ice pads in front of Port Perry Marina. In all, 28 teams, including both men and women, competed throughout the day and in the process raised almost $8,000 for local charities and covering expenses in operating the event. This year, organizers were able to hand over $4,000 to the Scugog Me- morial Library expansion fund and $4,000 to the Durham Region chapter of Autism Ontario. Brian Callery, one of the organizers, described the day’s activities as “absolutely tremendous,” and applauded all those who chipped in to make it happen. “We have already had calls and emails from a number of people who want to make sure they are included in next year’s pond hockey event,” he said. And plans, including doubling the rinks from five to 10, are already underway. “We have even had a couple of former NHLers indicating they’d love to participate,” Brian smiles. On the groups wish list, is to locate an old tractor-mounted Zamboni which would help in flooding the rinks after games. But even without it, they plan to expand the number of rinks to accommodate more teams. a a nyone wanting information about next year’s event can contact = iene Joanne at Village Decor Shoppe in Port Perry.
