Putting a face on cancer Faith in the face of uncertainty - one remarkable woman’s journey... Her refrigerator doors are a testament of what she values most... all but the handles, com- pletely covered with photographs of friends and family; smatterings of crayon covered creations drawn by her beloved grandchildren tacked up alongside. Her home is warm and welcoming, as is her brilliant smile and joyously positive demeanour. Sprightly and somewhat pixie-like, she is a mere 100 pounds of spunk - a go get ‘em attitude with a bright smile and a shock of spiky silver hair. Dot Hooker has a name one might not soon forget, but the moniker quickly fades once you get to know this amazing woman! Well known in Scugog, she’s a loved and highly respected member of the Greenbank community. Having lived here for 30 years, she can look around, from parks to sidewalks, and see so many posi- tive changes that she was an integral part of. Dot was one of the first people I met when our family moved to this quaint hamlet four years ago. It became evident that Dot had her finger on the pulse of the town and was involved in most community events. She received the volunteer of the year award in 2003 for her unyielding support and commit- ment to the improvement of the town, including her involvement with Brownies and Girl Guides, teaching Sunday school; the building of side- Dot Hooker gets great joy from sitting by her kitchen window watching her winged friends at the birdfeeder.
