Don MacLeod president of community newspaper group For the first time in more than 40 years, Scugog Township is home to the president of the Ontario Community Newspaper Association. Don MacLeod was elected to the office on Friday, May 14, during the annual general meeting of the association. Mr. MacLeod is a partner and co-publisher of CAPS, a monthly community newspaper published in Port Perry by Scugog Communications Group, but has been involved in the newspaper industry in a variety of capacities for almost 25 years. The last time the OCNA presidency was held locally was in 1969 when the late Per Hvidsten, a former owner/ publisher of The Port Perry Star, held the position. Mr. MacLeod purchased The Port Perry Star from J. Peter Hvidsten, in October 2000 and operated it for three years before selling it to the Metroland Media Group. For two years after selling The Port Perry Star, he served as Director of Advertising Development for the Osprey Media Group. He was then offered the position of publisher with Northumberland Publishing, responsible for the Cobourg Daily Star and Port Hope Evening Guide. In 2008 he was promoted to Sr. Vice President of Sun Media Group’s central division, located in Barrie, Ont. While there he was responsible for 17 community newspapers. Unhappy with the long daily commute, he resigned this position in 2009 and became a partner in the Scugog Communications Group. eod has lived in Port Perry for the past 10 years. He has two children, Christopher and Olivia and his wife Birgitta is a partner in the popular Meta4 Contemporary Art Gallery on Queen St. One of Mr. MacLeod’s goals during his term as president of the 312 member OCNA, is to encourage the provincial newspaper associations across Canada to begin working more closely together. Vintage, classic cars will shine 1920s to the 1980s, as well as custom and tuner cars. The event will also feature vendors of car memorabilia and builder items. Car enthusiasts take heart. The an- nual Scugog Shores Classic Car Show & Shine is only weeks away. Billed as “Chrome By the Lake,” the popular show takes place again this year on Water St., Port Perry, along the shore of Lake Scugog. Hundreds of cars will start arriving early Saturday morn- ing, June 26 and the show and shine will be open to the public from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. “Chrome By The Lake” has become a favourite of classic car fans from across the township and beyond. The day will feature classic cars from the ll profits from the show, sponsored by the Scugog Standard, will go toward support- ing the work at the Scugog Shores Museum. Entry is only $5 per car, and includes, 50/50 draws for car owners, as well as draws for thousands of dollars in prizes.
