Despite the medical or physical setbacks Jim may be experienc- ing himself, he insists the young ones are more than enough reason to show up at the starting line every year. And with the Port Perry Legion generously sponsor- ing him for most of his participating years, including this year, he says he has even more reason to participate. “In the beginning I was only able to raise $20,” Jim a] _ 2gal Fall Mums, ing Cabbage or Kale ing Cabbage or Kale ea or 3 for 10.00 le Fountain Grasses Perennials & Adi, Flowering Shrubs Cedars and more ) ~)) 10.00 each Fall Decorations Gourds, Corn Stalks Century Home & Garden 1431 Hwy. 7A, Port Perry * 905-985-2672 Where the Spirit of Gardening Lives says. Fortunately, for many years now, the Legion has generously pledged $200 in Jim’s name for the cause. Elizabeth adds that even though the ‘run’ focuses on fundraising, it is also about providing emotional sup- port for the individuals and families touched by cancer. “Tt gives people permission to talk about going through treatment,” she explains. “There can be a real stigma to- wards cancer... for so often people didn’t talk about it.” She smiles thinking about how the event, although it can be a painful experience for those involved, is a celebratory experience for many. “Families can utilize this as a way to talk about their stories,” she says. “And with Terry’s Team Members, parents see kids who at a young age have had cancer and they’ve not only survived, but thrived.” Elizabeth explains that the Terry Team Members (individuals who have had cancer and represent the foundation in their local community) live by the philoso- phy that cancer does not define them. Instead, it is just a part of their life experience. This philosophy, she insists, is an important message for all suffering individuals and families. After all, as Elizabeth says, “medical treatment is important but emotional support is just as important.” Jim also recognizes the emotional benefits of community support and as he speaks about his commitment to the foundation, he determinedly states, “I’m going to fight it as long as I can.” This year’s Terry Fox Run is Sunday, September 19th. Registration opens at Palmer Park at 8:00 am with a wel- coming of p ip and the i of Terry’s Team Members at 9:00 am. There are no registration fees and no required mini- mum amount of donations because, as Terry Fox said best, “If you've given a dollar, you are part of the Mara- thon of Hope.” By Christina Coughlin ‘ocus on Scugog cramp-l and bruising to the area. improves your existing movement, flexibility and will return you to the activities you love doing soo!
