Raising a final cup to a welcomed retirement After ten years of running the Boardwalk Café at Port Perry Marina, Deb Storms and Al Fulford have decided to retire, hang up their aprons and enjoy a little bit of downtime. Said Deb “1 still want to work, but not as many hours as we have been. A restaurant is seven days a week and you never really leave it. It’s time for Al and I to slow down a bit.” Deb worked at Hank’s Pastries for 23 years and did double duty with the Boardwalk Café for seven of those. While she did her shift at Hank’s, Al manned the fort at the Boardwalk Café and then when her day was over, she went to work at her own place. It’s no wonder they want to slow down — although they will miss their customers badly. The affable couple cannot believe the number of friends they have made over the years of running their restaurant. “We have made some life long friends here. We have also watched our staff grow; Kirsten, Hayley, Nicole and Stephanie are almost like our own children and we have watched them grow into fine people,” Deb ys. So much in their business is weather related and our long winters made for some very long, hard days for both of them. What's next for them? Al’s quick response was “A month of rest.” Deb wants to spend more time with her grandchildren and then maybe work part time. Both want to focus on their health and get some much needed rest. Most of all, they look forward to being ‘normal’ people — people who work during the week and have weekends off to enjoy their families. ‘Normal’ is not a word I would use to describe Deb and Al, but we wish them all the very best in whatever it is they find themselves doing after life at the Boardwalk Café.
