Champion fiddler chugs into Blackstock with his “All Aboard” show Renowned Canadian fiddler Scott Woods from Fergus will be pulling into Blackstock to deliver a live presentation of his all new 2011 show called All Aboard! hosted by St. John’s Anglican Church. All Aboard! is an old time fiddle variety show featuring Canadian Open and Canadian Grand Master Fiddle Champion Scott Woods and a band of incredibly talented performers. The show delivers a collection of old time fiddle music in the style of Canadian Fiddle Icon Don Messer, along with traditional country songs, gospel favourites, trick fiddling and some sensational Canadian step danc- ing sure to delight all. The Scott Woods Band travels across Canada each year performing a limited number of engage- ments, all of which help to support churches, chari- ties and other community groups. This ‘too good to miss’ concert will take place at the Blackstock Recreation Centre, located at 3440 Church Street, on September 16, 2011 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., and proceeds will be used to help support St. John’s Anglican Church and Outreach Programs in the Community. Tickets for this top notch entertainment are very reasonably priced at only $20 for adults and $10 for kids 12 and under, and can be purchased at Kari-Jo’s Coffee & Café located at 10249 Old Scu- gog Road, Burketon or by calling Diane Hamilton at (905) 982-0968. Although the grass is cut occasion- ally, the gardens and general appearance around the school is a disgrace. Weeds and grass have overtaken the interlocking bricks outside the library, and flower beds are overgrown. We realize the school is closed for the summer but maintenance is needed year-round — weeds and grass don’t stop growing during holidays! Thumbs Up to local officials who appear to have listened to the public regarding the lack of picnic tables in Palmer Park. Less than two weeks after a Focus reader suggested a ‘thumbs down’ to whoever ordered the removal of picnic tables in Palmer Park, the lakefront park and Birdseye Centre are now dotted with new tables. So in the spirit of fairness - we give a big ‘thumbs up’ to the decision makers at the township. Thumbs Down to the mindless vandals that pulled a me- Mmorial statue off its base, dragged it off private prop- © erty and destroyed it. The statue was a memorial to a Caesarea woman's husband and it’s destruction has broken her heart. She can’t believe anyone would vio- late her property and the memorial to the man she loved. Neither can we and we join her in voicing our condemna- tion for this senseless act of destruction. You should be ashamed of yourselves. (See letter on page 2) Thumbs Down for the lack of space (actually no designat- ed space) provided for local dog owners to let their canine friends run to get exercise. One of our read- ers suggest that the small piece of land alongside the walkway to Apple Valley from Scugog St. would be a great place to fence off and be used for a dog park. We're not certain that's the best spot, but agree there should be some fenced area that dogs can run loose. Of course dog owners need to be responsible for cleaning up the ‘dung’ left behind by their furry friends. Thumbs Up to the stamina of our local and visiting ‘Brits’. For the third year in a row, the local ‘Brits On The 3g Lake’ car show has been deluged with heavy rain. But in spite of the unpleasant weather - which | sus- pect they are used to, coming from the old country - most of the hearty souls just pull on their weather gear, wind up the windows on their vintage cars and ‘weather the storm’ with smiles on their faces. Way to go chaps! Have you got a suggestion for “Thumbs”? We love fo hear from our readers. Something bugging you or some- thing that needs praise - send your ideas along. Just remember, all submissions will be considered, but not necessarily used.
