Polar Bear by Clint Jammer Continued from page 15 understand the animal, you have to see it in its natural habitat,” he says. Clint explains; “You need to do this to study the diet, the vegetation, the nature of the light in its environment. This is necessary to get the amount of detailing necessary to make the picture believable and to enable the viewer to enter into the painting.” He adds, “Zoos and game farms serve a purpose as a backup, but in those environments, the animals are not exercised, they are deprived of much of their hunting for food. In their natural environments they are different animals. Asa result of their diet, their coats and physique are different. They have a dif- ferent look in their eyes.” “Double Eagle” (see page 15) is one of Clint’s latest paintings. This work came as a result of an expedition he and they are looking at?” his wife Rae-Anne took to Campbell River, B.C. They spent several weeks in the region explor- ing and photographing a variety of subjects. “T happened to see these two eagles perched on two posts as you see in the picture. The posts were part of the remains of an old saw mill. We were in a small boat tossing around in the water, so we took hundreds of photographs of the elegant birds before they flew off,” he states. Clint explains how the final result came about; “In blocking out the painting, I had to change many aspects of the scene: their feath- ers, the light, mist in the background etc. But I did stick closely to the subjects and their setting, tight down to the spike in the one post. My best shot of them was when they were looking at each other but I painted them looking away at something out of the picture. That adds an air of curiosity to the viewer. What do you think that Clint’s wife Rae-Anne does all the research for their expeditions and with her background in marketing, she also looks after the sales and promotion of Clint’s work.
