| Lifetong resi- dent of Port Perry, | last month to remind us, it has been 50 years since the new maple leaf flag was hoisted to the top | of flag poles all across Canada. In Port Perry, the flag was raised on f Aa February 15, 1965 in front of the Port pole, before dashing back Mr. Archer, who is now 87, recalled that as soon as the flag reached the top of the pole, he jumped into his car to escape the cold, and drove Perry Public School and also at the local post office. At the local public school, Mr. Archer, school board chairman, and Scotty McFarlane, representing the teachers, dashed outside in the bitterly cold weather to raise the new red maple leaf to the top of the flag | inside. to his work in downtown Port Perry. Meanwhile at the post office, bright and early the same morning, care- taker Charlie Reesor hoisted the flag to the top of the federal building. Two weeks later, on Monday, March 1, 1965, an official ceremony was held at Port Perry Public School (later renamed R.H. Cornish Public School), where it was witnessed by 512 students, teachers and members of the school board. Principal Roy Cornish spoke briefly, while two students held the flag on display at the base of the flag pole. All watched with pride, as the bright new flag was raised to the top of the pole.
