MARCH.FOCUS.32.indd 20 Danish exchange student in awe of Canada’s size The Rotary Club of Port Perry is again hosting students from abroad in its student exchange program. This year Line (pronounced “lenur”) Nielsen is living here in Port Perry and attending Port Perry High School for a year. Eighteen-year-old Line is from Redsten, a town of about 2,000, about a three hour drive west of Copenhagen in Denmark. Her father is the past president of the Rotary Club in the nearby town of Egtved. Line arrived here last August. When asked about her immediate reaction to Canada she said, “Oh the size of every- thing. Canada is such a huge country. I was immediately impressed by the size of the land, the distances, the trucks, the cars.” She continued; “But I really love Port Perry with its pretty shops and pleasant appearance... and the lake, oh it is so scenic!” “T really enjoy school here even though I am with students who are a year or so younger than me. When I return I still have two more years of school before university. The beauty of education in Denmark is that university is completely free there.” There are presently 44 students here in Canada on ex- change in the Rotary program. Those in the GTA get together four times to compare notes. “I have been taken to see a number of places in Ontario and J have met fellow exchange students who are all across the province, but I prefer Port Perry,” Line commented. “When we return to Port Perry it’s like taking a step back, away from the hustle and bustle of the other places.” When asked which subject she enjoys most here at Port Perry High School, she had no hesitation in replying, “out- eS door education”. Line Nielsen, 18, is an exchange student from Denmark. We have learned to canoe and we have been hiking.
