MAY 64 FINAL FINAL.indd 46 Reign comes to end for Scugog Township's “Queen of the Nile” Port Perry has hundreds of people who support community groups, all of which help the less fortunate. Last week I had the pleasure of meeting one of our residents who has just finished a year as ‘Queen of the Nile’. More accurately she was the reigning queen of the Daughters of the Nile, an international orga- nization who are related by birth or marriage to a Shriner, a Mason or another Daughter of the Nile. This year’s queen is Scugog’s very own Elaine Clare Flowers, a member of the organi- zation since 2006, but before that spent 30 years as part of the Order of the Eastern Star (an affiliate group). Her duties include overseeing the activities of 200+ members in the GTA and Durham, as well as continuing to raise funds in unique and diversified ways. The group was founded in 1913 and now boasts 33,000 members world-wide. Their only purpose is to raise money for the 22 children’s hospitals built by the Shriners. Since its inception the fraternity has raised/do- nated nearly $50 million. “For many years we would bake pies and sell them. We normally sold between 1,500 and 1,700 pies at our annual fundraiser.” The group recently stopped baking and now sell the dough. “We used to get many requests for our delicious pastry, so instead of selling the pies we decided to sell the dough in one pound bags,” Elaine explained. (Orders accepted at ec.flowers@powergate.ca) Her crown may have been returned at the end of her reign in March, but her good deeds will continue on as long as she is able. Daughters of the Nile is a great orga- nization which helps children around the world. Their website is www.daughtersofthenile.com.
