SEPTEMBER.48 pgsindd 14 Thums As the heat continues deep into the summer, now almost fall, our readers are still finding plenty of things that irritate them... so we start off another month on the negative side with Thumbs Down! Here goes... Thumbs Down - one disgruntled resident suggests a thumbs down to Scugog Township for excessive- ®y jacking up the rates of the community's halls and facilities. He says, high prices ultimately decrease the halls’ usage, as groups and individuals look elsewhere, using churches and seeking accommo- dation outside the township. Thumbs Up- Nice to receive a positive comment from one of our readers — who gives a thumbs up to the attractive hanging baskets along the streets in downtown Port Perry. “They give such beau- ty and aura to the feeling of summer,” she says, and suggest those responsible must be using the correct fertilizer to create this joy to behold. Qe Thumbs Down - Another ‘thumbs down’ this month is aimed at Canada Post, who one householder says is harassing rural residents by moving mail- box locations and heights without consulting the community or the drivers. They suggest, “as rates keep going up and the services down, it’s no wonder they keep losing business.” ® Thumbs Down - A loyal reader of Focus on Scugog, called suggesting a ‘thumbs down’ to some destructive individuals. According to our source, unknown vandals smashed two large flower pots and a decorative light standard in front of a home in Victorian Village for no apparent reason. Vandalism by any name is a mystery. Shame on them! p Thumbs Up - Nice to hear the viewing platform in Ro- tary Park near the boat launch is being repaired. 3 So we'll give a thumbs up this month to the township and the workers who have been busy levelling and securing the platform, which was severely damaged by ice floes this past spring. Thumbs Down - We're not sure if anyone realizes, but that 5¢ fee (tax) we pay to purchase a plastic Porcer bag in many stores is also taxable. But, unless you've tried to purchase just a single bag, you probably didn’t know there is a “one cent tax” on that 5¢ bag. Tax on tax - nothing new for the govern- ment, but don’t ya just hate that! So a big Thumbs Down for the plastic bag “tax grab” — and an another Thumbs Down for having to cough up another 1¢ tax on the 5¢ bag fee. Bah, humbug! 12-08-20 10:37 AM
