=) GRE) ENWOOD MusHroom FarRM Massive Scugog mushroom farm produces more than 300,000 Ibs. each week You may have driven north on Highway twelve and noticed a gi- gantic new building just north of the sixth line and wondered what was inside the walls of the structure. Well I certainly did and when I stopped in, was surprised to learn it is the new home of Greenwood Mushroom Farm. Not knowing a great deal about mushrooms, I was looking forward to learning more as I entered the brand new, 127,000 square foot facil- ity. 1 was met by Nick Van Halteren, one of the partners who operates this vast new venture in Scugog. “My father-in-law, Mac Snobelen, started the business 34 years ago,” Nick explained. “He worked for Campbell Soups and had a small farm in Greenwood,” (Westney and Highway 7 area). For the past 19 years the com- pany has been operating out of their Ashburn facility, but the need to expand was evident by the growth of their business. “We employ 80 people in the Port Perry facility and people love the cleanliness, automa- tion and sheer size of the building,” Nick said, with pride. Eighty per cent of the company’s Nick Van Halteren, a partner of Greenwood Mushroom Farm, with shelves of mushrooms and automated assembly line.
