Two quilts feature names of Seagrave residents from 1924 The puzzle surrounding a long for- gotten quilt appears to have been solved. The mystery quilt, now in safe-keep- ing at the Seagrave United Church, first came to light earlier this year when the Port Perry Oddfellows Hall was sold. While helping to clean out the hall, Eleanor Sturman found a paper bag on top of a coat rack. Curious as to it's con- tents, she opened the bag and found a large quilt made up of 42 red and white blocks. Each 9"x9" block has eight names of Seagrave residents embroidered on it. In the centre of the quilt was a block with "Seagrave Ladies Aid, 1924." While unknown at the time it was found, the quilt had been brought to the Oddfellows by Noreen Crosier to give to the Seagrave United Church for safe- keeping. Investigating further, they found the quilt originated with the Wes Crosier family. It was subsequently handed down to Don and Noreen Crosier and finally arrived at the Seagrave church last fall. Asecond, smaller quilt, has also surfaced. Made up of only 12 blocks, it contains 88 names of women from the community. This quilt was purchased at a yard sale and brought to the Seagrave store in the late 1990s. Martin Fisher, then owner of the store, directed the stranger to Fern Tobin, a long time resident of the village. It was her opinion that the quilt had been made by a long forgotten group called the Quadratas Girl's Club. The quilt is embroidered and in the centre block is “Forget Us Not” and Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, Sea- grave 1924. It remained in Mrs. Tobin's possession until her death, eventually ending up at the church. While the mystery seems to be 24 FOCUS - DECEMBER 2013 Eleanor Sturman of Seagrave, with the ‘mystery quilts’ made in 1924. solved, members of the church are still curious as to why two quilts would have been embroidered during the same year, since they were usually made for fundraising.
