Now 95, Doug and his youngest daughter, Gerrie, have booked an around- the-world trip in January, 2015. War is hell, there’s no escaping that. The priva- tions are many, the sacrifices supreme. But under- neath the fear and ugliness, the lives of real people press forward as best they can in many “normal” ways. Fighting and coming close to dying on multi- ple continents, Doug Franks certainly found all the hell and all the adventure one man could crave. But in a small, bright corner of that dark period, he also found the love of his life. He found a love which endured six years of separation, flourished through a half-century of marriage, and in Doug’s continuing gestures throughout his travels, blooms to this very day.
