Opened in 1946 as a social outlet for Port Perry and area veterans who were returning from the war Wartime service leaves its mark as much a collective experience as it does a series of impactful events for an individual. So while many veterans prefer to submerge memories of the violence and privations, at war’s end they also yearn for the camaraderie which grew out of those shared experiences. Returning vet's from World War II an- swered this need with the formation of the “British Empire Service League,” which we know today as the Royal Canadian Legion. Port Perry proudly incorporated its own Branch 419 in 1946, as a social outlet for repatriated veterans — exclusively men at the time — as well as a community service club. But the passage of time demands adapta- tion to changing conditions, and the Legion has been no exception. With war veterans decreasing in numbers each year, revisions were necessary if the organization hoped to survive into the 21st century.
