WHERE DID IT GO Woodman’s absence from lakefront had many questioning if it will return Local cruise ship Woodman will operate as a restaurant at Beacon Marine in Caesarea After weeks of speculation and rumours about the whereabouts of the Woodman cruise ship this sum- mer, it’s official. The Woodman, Lake Scugog’s cruise ship has been sold and will no longer be docked along side the wharf at Port Perry’s lakefront. Commissioned by Ed and Betty Penny, and built at the Westshore Marine, north of Port Perry, The Woodman was launched in August 2003 and operated on Lake Scugog, for a full decade. Unfortunately the costs of operating the cruise boat proved to be unprofitable and Scugog Island Cruises ceased operation at the end of the 2013 season. When the vessel came up for auction it was bought by Kelly Patterson of the Beacon Marina at Caesarea. Kelly has informed Focus on Scugog that the Woodman will now be incorporated as part of the breakwater and dock structure at the Marina. “We will be using it oc- casionally for private functions, but it will be open as a seasonal water- side restaurant on Friday, Saturday and Sunday,” he says. Kelly added, “The fact that the vessel has its own self contained fire 26 FOCUS - JULY 2014 The Woodman docked at the Queen St., Port Perry pier last year. protection and generating system makes it convenient to operate as a self contained restaurant.” He hopes to have the restaurant facility open some- time between mid and late July this year The restaurant will be run by Shari Brown who operates the Red Ribbon Restaurant on Water Street in Port Perry. When operating as a cruise boat on Lake Scugog the vessel was licensed to carry up to 110 passengers, however, Kelly tells us that he is having the vessel rearranged to accommodate a maximum of 60 guests. Since 1928 the Beacon Marina property started out as a popular fishing camp and then became a marina with its own dance pavilion. It was named the Beacon Marina in the 1960s but in 1990 the property was sold and owned by a succession of motorcycle gangs including the notorious Hell's Angels. Kelly Patterson and his business partner Mike Mitchell bought the Bea- con Marina in 2005. They converted it back into a fully functional boating facility offering boat slip rentals and docking facilities for sailboats and powerboats. They also operate a sailing school. Beacon Marina is now the home for the Lake Scugog Sailing Club and the Bowmanville Sea Cadets use the Marina as a nautical training centre. At the time of the Lake Scugog Regatta on Friday August 1, the marina will be offering a “Surf and Turf ” dinner on board the refurbished and rede- signed Woodman. Kelly commented that “Dining on board the Woodman will offer a spe- cial ambiance as there are spectacular sunset views across the waters of Lake Scugog.” It is encouraging to see that The Woodman will take on a new and revi- talized role on the shores of Lake Scugog.
