noon hosted by Prince Albert and Port Perry United Churches. This event features an old-time hymn sing, bible readings, communion, and afternoon tea. “It's nice for people who can’t get out regularly to go to church,” she noted. On Thursday and Friday mornings, there was Ilean, out in front of the Royal Bank working for the Hospital AuxiliaryTag Days. She also used to volunteer at the local hospital. For 60 years, lean has been active with Prince Albert United Church and the UCW. One of the popular fund- raisers they do in the fall is an apple pie sale. Ilean says that the ladies set up an assembly line at the church and have a fun-filled social time while making all of the pies, which are pre-ordered. The Plant and Bake Sales at the church are always successful too. “We have a small congregation, but a lot of great workers,” she commented. When she was raising her four children, three sons and a daughter, Ilean played an active role in school activities. After her kids were grown, Ilean took ona job asa Red Cross Homemaker, which was perfectly suited to her nurturing personality. Ilean’s daughter, Bonnie Solomon of Port Perry, is following in her mother’s footsteps as a volunteer. She’s a vibrant member of Port Perry United Church. Bon- nie also volunteers at the nursing home, and reads with students at S.A. Cawker School. It is very impor- tant for volunteers to show up,” she added. In her ‘spare’ time, Ilean enjoys reading mystery sto- ries, and working in her flower garden. Oh yes, and she also makes beautiful quilts, which have won ribbons at the Port Perry Fair. But it’s the volunteer work that she enjoys most of all. Thank-you, Iean.
