finds a good home for 350-400 cats a year, and 150-200 dogs. “The cleaning, feeding, running of the shelter and customer service is about 50 per cent of what we do,” explains Victoria. It’s a busy, noisy spot, and the staff are on call 24 hours a day to do things like pick up strays in the large area they cover, or rescue pets from car accident scenes, or homes where the owners have died, and then bring them back to their new, temporary home at the shelter. The staff welcome visitors any time and always ap- preciate donations of money, pet food, treats and towels and sheets. “No comforters or pillows though,” laughs Kathy. “Because then in the morning we have a feather explosion.” The cost to adopt cats and dogs, currently at $50-$75, is low compared to most shelters, thanks to the support of the community and the success of the annual Super Pet calendar. “People are so giving, all the little kids that come in with treats they’ve asked kids to bring to their birthday parties, it’s really great,” says Victoria. “I don’t think you'll find a place that loves animals like we do.” They love them so much, and their service is so essential and respected by the community, that the Uxbride-Scugog Animal Control Centre is on the verge of a major fundraising campaign to create a larger, more efficient centre, that will make even more happy endings possible.
