No minimum pledge, Eight year-old Kate McArthur and her four year-old sister Sarah, are both ready and willing to help their granny, Elizabeth McArthur, organizer of the Port Terry Fox Run. They will be putting up posters and placing lawn signs throughout the town. The Terry Fox Run returns to the Port Perry Fair- grounds on Sunday, September 20th. Participants can choose to run, walk, or bike the 1km, 5km or 10km accessible routes that begin and end at the Fairgrounds. When participants return, there is a complimentary barbecue provided by local sponsors and prepared by the Blackstock and District Lions Club. For a number of years we have wanted to have a children’s activity area, and finally we have someone to organize activities. Can’t wait to see what they have for the kids. The annual Terry Fox Run for cancer research, has raised more than $650 million since Terry’s Marathon of Hope in 1980. This marks the 35th anniversary of Terry’s Run and once again, Port Perry and area will be out to continue Terry’s dream to “Outrun Cancer”. It is critical to know that there isn’t any operating budget to host a Community Run. We rely on sponsors who continue to support us each year. We are proud to volunteer for the ‘Terry Fox Foundation, knowing that 84 cents ofevery dollar raised goes directly to cancer research www.terryfox.org. Terry Fox Run Day is a special day for participants. Many take part to honour loved ones who have battled. cancer, and want to make a difference for others. This is where the concept of Terry’s Team began. A Terry’s Team Member is anyone who has a personal diagnosis of can- cer, is at any stage of their treatment or recovery, and is a participant in the Terry Fox Run. They are proud mem- bers of the red-shirted brigade known as Terry’s Team. If you are interested in being a Terry’s Team Member, you can register online or contact Elizabeth for more informa- tion. Terry’s Team has become an important part of the Port Perry TFR, as we welcome and celebrate with them each year. Terry asked Canadians to donate $1 to his Marathon of Hope, and today his wishes have continued. Participants can make a personal donation on run day or collect on- line donations or pledges. There is no minimum donation and no pre-registration. Participants often come to the run as part of a group, and now there is a way to reg- ister. Team Up for Terry (TUET), co-workers, networks, family/friends, sports teams. TUFT’s is a great way re increase the amount = money raised and a great way to spend a morning with your ‘team’ For more information contact terryfox.org or local organizer Elizabeth McArthur at 905-985-0951 or elizabethkmcarthur@gmail.com 14 FOCUS - SEPTEMBER 2015
