Then early in the third period it was again Jeremy Gibson from Kent Johnston Wyatt Park to tie the game up at two a piece. With Big V's goalie Ryan Puckrin stop- ping everything Uxbridge fired at , his team kept on plugging away and finally with only a lit- tle over a minute to go ip the e it was Kent Johnston on a ine solo effort that scored to give ig V a well deserved win. ith the win over Uxbridge this put the Big V boys into 'B' inals against Port Hope. The second period belonged to Port Hope as the Big V boys an to tire out and Port Hope tied the game at two after two iods of play. The third period d both teams playing hard with lots of scoring chances but Ryan Puckrin in net for Big V made some fine stops. With the score tied and only four minutes left in the game one of the referees made what is like- ly the most outrageous call of the tournament when he awarded a Easuin play Port Hope scored play k ope Sco 0 0 out front 3-2 and at the same e killed the spirit of the Big V "Port Hope quick quickly scored again oh the detlated Big V toam and won the game by a 4-2 score. The Big V team next travelled to Omemee on Jan. 4 for their se- cond tournament of the season. Big V found themselves facing off against the Bancroft Jets, and 'A' team that seems to like beating up on house league teams. Ryan Puckrin scored the lone goal for Big V with Jeremy Gibson assisting on the play. he pig V boys now came up against St. Pauls out of Peter- porgugh, Putting the first game them the Big V boys came out determined to win this one. Pauls got 2 break ane broke g Short's shutout by u the game half way into the third period. But Big V was not to be ied this game as they con- tinued their hard work and it paid off in the dying minutes as Kent Johnston scored on a nice set u by Jeremy Gibson to give Big a 2-1 lead. Big V hung on to take the win and move into the 'B' finals. ~ Special mention goes to Big V's defence of Ryan Williamson, Luke Newman, Noah Smith, 'Big' Nick Skerratt and Wyatt 'Orr' Park that played extremely well that waschan or been in net since last year. with the assist going to Alicia. XL Gas Bar Eaglettes cruise to 8-2 victory The Eaglettes travelled to Markham to finish the first half of the schedule. The girls were looking to give themselves a win as a Christmas present that followed the team party the night before. With our earliest start of the year (11 a:m.), the eyes were a little weary upon arrival at an arena location d at the last minute. Sarah Verschuuren volunteered to go into goal so that Ali- cia Burgess, our regular goalie, could have a chance to play out. Sarah did a stand-up job allowing only two goals against. A special thanks to Sarah for her great team atti- tude and for doing such a super job. Sarah has not practiced Melissa Hooker opened the scoring a minute and a half into the game on a set up by Nicole Virtue, Alaina Davis notched her third of the year next with the assist going to Leanne Davison. Port stretched its lead when Stacey Cun- ningham slipped one past the Markham netminder on a pass from Melissa. Melissa made it 4-0 with five min- utes left in the first period with an unassisted goal. Just six seconds later Markham netted their first goal. Nicole playing a strong game with lots of hustle made it 5- 1 when Stacey led her nicely to put Nicole in for a pretty goal. At this point, all players were being rotated to give everyone a chance to play all positions. This worked for Katherine Cooke, a regular stand-out red stick, as she put one in the net on a pass from a hard working Kristin Waller. Alicia, roving to be an asset to this team in goal and out scored for foe first ever goal on an unassisted effort. Rounding out the scoring getting her first goal also was Janna Ostafichuk The final score in this pre-Christmas game was Port Perry XI, Gas Bar 8, Markham 2. The effort you display girls is paying great dividends. Keep it up in the new year, the schedule is going to be very challenging. 2 keeping the opposing players away from the front of their own net and broke up numerous rushes as well. With the win over St. Pauls the Big V boys now came up against Warkworth for the championship. These two teams were both even- ly matched and both teams were playing their best hockey. The irst period ended in a scoreless tie with Big V having the best chances as Jeff Whitfield narrow- 'ly missed a couple of chances from close in. Due to a shortage of forwards Big V's defence show- ed their versatility as Noah Smith had to be moved up from his defensive position to fill in on the wing. Noah showed how versatile he is as he opened the scoring for Big V on a nice set up by Phil Don- n and Kent Johnston. a 8 second period Sed with ig V up 1-0 and Doug hang- ing onto his shutout bid. The third iod was just as fast paced as he first with both teams going har Big y hed lon to their ous goal lead until a tripping penaity and bench minor (sor wn 1 ) put the Big V boys shorthanded by two players. The penalty killers played well but Warkworth kept he pressure on and finally managed to tie the game. Regulation time ended with the teams locked at one a piece and it was now a five minute sudden death period to be played. Both teams gave it their all and after the five minutes it was still a tie game and we now moved into the eaded shoot-out. In a shoot-out each team selects five shooters who will each take a penalty shot on the opposing goalie as the op- posing team takes penalty shots on your goalie simultaneously. With Big V's five shooters ready and Faring to go and Doug Short minding the Big V net we were ready to go. Kent Johnston went first and scored. Doug made - the save at the other end and Bi V is up 2-1. The second pair wen with neither boy able to score. The third pair went and Doug made a big glove save but the Big V shooter was shut down also. The fourth pair went with Warkworth able to get one by Doug and Big V unable to score and we are again tied at 2-2. The fifth pair came to the line and the tension mounted. Wyatt 'Orr' Park cooly gathered in the puck and headed toward Warkworth's goal as the Warkworth player eaded toward Big V's goal. The Warkworth forward shifted left then right and back again but Doug stayed with him, cut off the angle and made the save while at the other end Wyatt made no mistake Dulting fie uck into the net giving the Big V boys a well deserved championship win. The boys were all presented very nice trophies for their vic- tory as well as three of the boys Doug Short, Kent Johnston and Jeremy Gibson received best ef- fort awards that were selected over the course of the day. Once again it was a total team effort from the Big V boys that won the tournament for them. With 20 sec- onds showing on the clock, Ca- sey VanShagen fired the puck down the ice just short of the Welland goal. Dillan Weber and a Welland forward raced for the loose puck and with one hand Dillan fired the puck into the empty net with 12 seconds left in the game.
