20 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, January 7, 1992 "Scugog's Community Newspaper af Choice » Allen Siding Tweens onsered by Allens Suliag vers Sponso y Allens Siding were looking forward to the Christmas Markham Tournament for sever- al weeks. Many of the team members had been on the Petite A team which returned home vic- torious last year, and had great memories and hopes for this year's events. This tournament is one of On- tario's largest, and in this 10th year of existance more than 70 teams take part. The Tweens were scheduled to meet competi- tors from Sudbury, Gloucester, Brooklin, Whitby and Pickering. The first game was against Gloucester, a strong team which eventually won the gold. The rep- utation of this fast skating and passing club had preceeded them, and Port knew they had to work hard. This match, which re- sulted in a 5-5 tie, ended up being the best game of the series for the Port Tweens. Although it was penalty filled, with two Port girls in the penalty box at once for al- most eight minutes of the game the play was end to end and the teams exchanged goals through- out. With one minute left in the tied game, a quick flip shot from Cara Vander Slagt came to a dead stop on the goal line as we all held our breath, and then sighed in disappointment. Brandy Harris and Shona Moase shared the goal scoring, with as- sists going to Bonnie Jo Norton, Linda Payne and Jenny Storms. Later in the day, our home team turned in a strong perfor- mance against the Brooklin- Whitby squad. This was a fast paced game, with Port holding the edge throughout. Lynda scored a short-handed goal after a minute and a half of play to set the tone. Later, Shona scored with two Port players in the box. Brandy really dug in this game and scored four goals, Shona and Dana Hooker each were credited with, two and Lynda with one and three assists. Heather Tredway in her first year in ringette is improving with each shift, and helped to set up three of the goals, while Jen- ny, Laura Hooker and Cara each got an assist. It was great to see the second year Tweens, Brandy, Lynda and Jenny, take a strong role in leading the team to a win. Saturday noon saw the team back in Thornhill to play ope of their regular opponents Picker- ing, who had just lost badly to Gloucester. Over-confidence is | the old excuse which might apply "here, because Port lost the game 9-2. The Port girls did not even take a shot on net until the 12. minute mark of the second peri- od, and at that point faced eight _ unanswered goals. The goals were scored by Shona and Laura, with an assist going to Lynda. In spite of the bad memories of the previous game, the girls were excited because they had figured out that they could still make the finals if they could pull out a win against Sudbury, their final com- petitor. However, this was an- other strong team who has made a reputation for itself. The Port girls played a good match, with much better passing and fore- checking. Katie was in great form in net and made many ex- cellent stops. The defense of Bon- ni-Jo, Jenny, Heather and Alicia Cracknell had put it together. However, the Sudbury squad was overpowering and all the time spent in the penalty box watching power-play goals go in resulted in the final score 10-3. Scoring for Port were Laura with two goals and an assist, Cara one goal and Dana with one assist. Although the Tween As did not bring a medal home, they did see signs of a team that is begin- ning to work together with en- thusiasm. The cheering section is waiting for the day when all the lines have a good game at the same time. That will be a game to watch. Thanks to the coaches Roy Hooker, Dianne Hooker and Walter Senyk for their encour- agement and wise decisions made on the weekend. Al- though the final score read 65-3 in favor of Almonte it could have been either teams game. Karen Kett opened the scoring on a pass by Kim Poppleton. Karen then assisted on Port's second goal 'scored by Shannon Fox. Port's third goal was scored, unassisted, by Dawn Port's next game was against the Markham Juniors who went on the offensive to propel them- selves into an early lead. The first period ended with Port Perry. trailing 5-2. Shannon Fox and Kim Poppleton popped in Port's two markers with assists going to Michelle Fitzpatrick and Leea Kinnunen. The second period opened with Markham firing in goal number six. Although the score looked like Markham was sail- ing to a win Port Perry decided they wouldn't go down without a fight. Nine minutes into the period Amy Parliament picked up a pass from Dawn Doucette to start Port Perry rolling on a scoring spree. With five minutes remaining Shannon Fox whipped in number four, fol- lowed, at the four minute mark, by number five scored by Karen Kett who also scored number six with one minute remaining. At this point Port trailed by a score of 7-6. With only 21 seconds re- maining Kim Poppleton fired in the tying goal. The game ended with a score of 7-7 on the board. Assists in this game went to Mi- chelle Fitzpatrick, Leea Kinnu- nen, Dawn Doucette, Amy Par- liament, Megan Marlowe and Jennifer Morden. In the third game Port Perry went up against a very tough team from Sudbury. During the first period Port skated with Sudbury to keep the score under control. Kim Poppleton popped in two goals with a single going to Karen Kett. Assists were awarded to Shannon Fox, Dawn Doucette, Megan Marlowe and Leea Kinnunen. However de- spite Port's best effort the sec- ond period belonged to Sudbury. Amy Parliament was responsi- ble for Port's lone marker as the Jvory Forest Juniors went down to defeat. DUE TO SHORTAGE OF SPACE some of this week's sports reports have been held over until next week The Markham Belles provid- ed the opposition for Port Perry's final game of the tourna- ment which ended on a high note as Port skated to a 6-3 win. The forward lines combined to set. up some nicely executed passing plays while the defense worked hard to keep Markham at bay. Leea Kinnunen was very effective on red stick as she went back to join Michelle Fitz- patrick and Jennifer Morden on defense. Kim Poppleton and Amy Par- liament scored twice with Dawn Doucette and Megan Marlowe rounding out the scoring. Karen Kett earned three assists, Leea Kinnunen had two and Megan Marlowe and Dawn Doucette had one each. Jennifer Morden had a turn at blue stick during the final minutes of the game but could not quite manage to find the net. The Ivory Forest Juniors turned 'out a very fine perfor- mance throughout the tourna- ment, providing a feisty, deter- mined opposition for their opponents. Thanks to Pam Hiltz, Lisa LeFort, Leanne Holt and Jennifer Donnel- ly because these goals were secured from their assists! Port's opposition scored twice in the second period. Jennifer Hammond was faced with only four shots in this game - in part because of the Coldwell Banker defense. After notching a solid lead the Country Lane Petite coaches moved the girls positions about - defense and offense learn- ed more about each others do- mains. A second win. Game three we faced our hosts! The Coldwell Banker Petites fac- ed the Markham I team and once again it was a lonely spot for our goalie, Jennifer Hammond who practiced sportsmanlike GUARANTEED INVESTMENT CERTIFICATES I EE css essr sss saane - ANNUAL RATES - tess sesssssssesae sess esssssessssnse sess sessssnsnssne Rates subject to change without notice SCUGOG FINANCIAL SERVICES A DIVISION OF CRESSBROOK FINANCIAL PLANNING LTD. 250 QUEEN STREET - PORT PERRY "Serving Scugog for Over 15 Years" PHONE 985-3832 qualities. Key Bar Juveniles lucky to defeat Sunderland team On Saturday, Dec. 28 Port Perry Key Bar Office Equipment Juveniles travelled to Sunderland and were lucky to come away with a 7-5 win. After a nine-day layoff, Port took a period to get on the scoreboard but the second frame was all Key Bar as they outscored their hosts six goals to one. Goals came from Mike Sorley, Gary Stevens, Craig Leask, defenseman Jody Wright, Jan Heyes, and Ethan Lavereau. Assists went to Scott Menzies with three, Mike Sorley with two, Ethan Lavereau, Greg Fit- - zgerald, Jan Heyes, Jody Wright, Derek Fitzgerald and Craig Leask. | In the third period, Port Perry almost blew the game with loose play and a couple of silly penalties. Key Bar were outscored four goals to one to make the final score 7-5. The ame was on the line until the last three minutes when Derek Fit- zgerald put it away for Port with assists going to Jason Towns and Greg Fitzgerald. Unfortunately an otherwise entertaining game was marred by penalties called and several behind the play infractions that were not called. The lack of con- trol exhibited bY the referees once again shows that the two man system of officiating doesn't work in juvenile hockey. a ----. YT A Tn Ro
