All-Ontario champions of 1976-77 to meet the champs of 1990-91 this Saturday at Scugog Arena The 1976-77 Bantam All-Ontario Champi- ons will be hitting the ice Saturday night to take on the Midget champions of 1990-91. A few months back, members of the Beare Motors Bantams of 1976-77 began reminisc- ing about their glory days when the talk of a reunion came up. What began as a simple conversation led to reality as one member, Todd Wilbur began contacting the original team members from 15 years ago. Mr. Wilbur told the Star that all but one of the original squad will be in action this week- end. On April 7, 1977 the Beare Motors Ban- tams defeated Mitchell to win the All-Ontario C Championships. The team had earlier de- feated Uxbridge, Oak Ridges and Bancroft. The champs of 15 years ago will be facing off Saturday evening against the Precison Construction Midget A team of 1990-91 which defeated Mooretown to capture the All- Ontario crown last season. Some members of other All-Ontario teams have been recruited to fill in for the squad if some members need a break. As for the coaching duties, they will be han- dled by the team's coach of 15 years ago, Doug Scott. Coincidentally Mr. Scott was also the coach of the Precision Construction team. The Bantam team was the first team Mr. Scott coached that won the coveted All- Ontario crown, and the Precision Construc- tion Midgets is the last team to win the cham- pionships with Mr. Scott at the helm. Many players from both teams have gone on to play Junior A, B and C hockey. George Burnett, coach of the Niagara Falls Thunder Junior team will be in uniform for the old Beare Motor Bantams. The action gets underway Saturday, Jan. 18 at 7:50 p.m. at Scugog Arena. Our boys opened the tourna- ment Friday night against Ux- 'bridge and outlasted them to win by a score of 2-1. Opening the scoring was Scott Brownson on a solo effort. Uxbridge answered with a goal in the second but the always reliable Port Perry ace, Braden Tarbotteh, potted the win- ner at 5:05 of the third period. Playing strong defensively for Port Perry was John Burnett and Grant Hooker. Drawing assists on Tarbotton's goal were Mike LeFort and Dean Van Camp. In game two on Saturday, Port Perry skated away with a much deserved 6-0 victory over Cann- ington. Steve Wygerde got on the board with two goals assisted each time by good passes from Mike LeFort and Scott Brownson. Also Scoring fot Port were David Justynski, Jason Whitworth, Braden Tarbotton and Chris "Shotgun" Skerratt with a "too-hot-to-handle'" wrist shot. Billy Carr played strongly at cen- tre and Sean Jeffrey played flawlessly on defense. Our tandem in net, D'Arcy Stephens and Chris Monsma deserve credit for their role as spectators since our defense did not allow any more than a couple of shots on net. In the championship game on Sunday, Port Perry continued to play well, defeating both Lindsay Bnd a referee that only was able to see white Port Perry jerseys. Despite playing short handed six times, Port Perry earned a well deserved shutout, winning 1-0. 'Dean Van Camp emerged the hero of the game, scoring the lone goal assisted by Chris Skerratt and Jason Whitworth. Steven Wygerde and Jason Whitworth layed stellar defensive hockey illing penalties in the last three minutes of the game. Scott Brownson and Adam Moynes were flying in this game and Mark Blak ey played solidly on defense. Both Port Perry net- minders earned their keep in this ame. ell done coaches Spencley, Empringham and Parry! Merchants defeat the ModJacks for the fourth time this season The Little Britain Merchants proved once again they have the Port Perry MoJacks' number this season. In a come from behind effort, the Merchants defeated the Mo- Jacks 7-6 at the Scugog Arena Sunday evening. In a season where the league- leading MoJacks have lost only five games, four of those losses have been at the hands of the second-place Merchants. - Neither team put on a stun- ning performance in the first pe- riod of play. In fact, the crowd was more entertained by two teams from the advanced tyke division who laced up and played a short game in between the first and second periods. The extra timein the dressing room was well used by the Mo- Jacks who made things happen for themselves in the second pe- riod. The Port Perry squad moved the puck well and were able to capitalize. But somewhere near the mid- way point of the third period, the MoJacks heard the fat lady sing and thought the game was over. "We just didn't play consis- tent hockey," said MoJacks gen- eral manager Murray Parlia- ment after the game. He pointed to defensive laps- es in the third period as the con- ~ tributing factor. "It gave (the Merchants) the momentum they needed," he said. Here's a report of how it all happened. MoJack. assistant captain Mike Coulson opened the scor- ing at the 12:50 mark in the first period. Assists went to Mark McKay and Chad Lefebvre. Merchant Dan Wist tied the score with 5:50 remaining in the first frame. The second period was almost all MoJacks, with goals by Peter Young from Clair Cornish and Lefebvre, Dan Sluggett from Ja- rett Harman, and a power play goal by Jim Vernon from Trevor 'McIntyre. oC MoJack goal Marc Dekker played a solid period stopping all but one shot. Merchant Dave Holliday was credited with'a power-play goal in the final mo- ments of the period. Score at the end of two frames: Port Perry 4, Mer- chants 2. The Merchants scored first in the third period to come within one goal of the Port Perry squad. The ModJacks fought back with two goals: Brad Menzies from Young, and Kevin Bag- shaw from Cornish. But that's all she wrote for the ModJacks and at the 10:48 mark, Merchant Greg Corneil, with help from teammates Dave Car- ruthers and Steve Roberts, scored a power-play goal, nar- rowing the MoJacks' lead to two goals. The MoJacks fate was sealed in a 30-second stretch that fol- lowed. The Merchants fired a short- handed goal through the Mo- Jack pipes at the 8:25 mark, and then with a full squad, got two more ringers with 8:14 and 7:56 minutes remaining. The ModJacks were playing without three of their players during Sunday night's match. Both Brian Shelfoon and John Lally were sitting out due to re- spective seven-game and three- game suspensions they received in the Dec. 29 showdown with the Bowmanville Eagles. Frank Kavanagh was out of the lineup due toillness. ModJacks over the Chiefs On Friday evening, the Mo- Jacks skated to an easy 7-4 vic- tory over the last-place Chiefs in Lakefield. The Chiefs opened the scoring in the second period, but the Mo- Jacks evened it up a minute lat- er when Troy English, on a pass from Menzies, found the net.
