REAL ESTATE BOARD (MLS SERVICE) A MEMBER OF THE SEARS FINANCIAL NETWORK | a . -~ a - One of my New Year's resolutions this year was to stop buying lottery tickets with Garnet, my niece Maxine's husband. We'd been taking turns buying tickets using the same numbers for years - you know, birthdays, anniversaries, things like that - and Garnet kept using them after I dropped out last week. Well, you won't believe it. Yesterday I saw the numbers in the morning paper and except for one, they were our numbers! I phoned Garnet and his wife Maxine answered. WE WON! WE WON!" she was screaming. Not wanting to put a damper on the party I said something like well, yes, except for one number and she said "What do you mean? We go them all!" No, I said, one was wrong - the year Em was born was out by one year. "Now, Uncle Phil," said Maxine, "that's the funniest thing about it. My mom said that number was wrong, so we changed it at the last minute. She said Aunt Em didn't want you to know she was actually a year older than you when you first met." Oh, it was funny, all right. In fact, | seemed to be laughing so hard I was crying. "Em!" I yelled upstairs, "You've got some 'splaining to doooooo!" Well wr I thought, maybe Garnet will spend some of that windfall on making his house less drafty - we freeze when we go over there! Here's how Emrand I found lots of drafts around our place when we first started caulking and weatherstripping around our place. Take a piece of bathroom tissue and hang it from a coat hanger with a clothes pin. On a cold, windy day, hold it in front of places where you think air is getting in; it'll flutter when it meets a draft. Since we started on various home projects to cut down on our use of electricity, we've been surprised at how easy it is to save energy. You just have to "get with the program" as my son Kyle would say. It doesn't take a lot of time; you just have to think a little more about it at first, like when you first started to recycle cans and bottles, until its automatic. There are literally hundreds of ways to reduce electricity use, and a lot of them don't cost much money or take a lot of time. Em and I caught onto some of them last year, and what better way for me to get my mind off the money | didn't win than to keep right on going this year! This newspaper, in conjunction with Ontario Hydro, is bringing-you Phil's Basement to help "bring home" ideas on how to save energy. To receive the brochure "How You Use Energy Wisely: Energy Tips from the People of Ontario," call Ontario Hydro at 1-800-263-9000 and tell them Phil sent you.
