Stretching your utility dollars If you're like most homeowners today, you're probably trying to stretch your dollars and save money on your utili- ty bills -- especially in light of recent increases. While you may think you'd have to live in the dark and keep your ther- mostat set at 55 degrees Farenheit to make a size- able dint in your bills, don't despair. There are several "common sense" things you can do to cut expenses, while still maintaining your crea- ture comforts. There is an additional payoff as well -- you'll be saving energy at the same time. To start with, take a look at your daily rou- tines and all the things you do around the house which require the use of utilities: the washing machine, the dryer, the dishwasher, the shower, the vacuum, refrigerator, lights, and so on. The list is virtually endless! Water Consumption Your shower stall is one of the easiest place to cut down on water consumption and save money. Consider install- ing a low-flow nozzle on your shower head. You can also save money by installing a shower head which has its own on/off valve. That way, you can turn the flow off while you're applying soap or shampoo. Also keep in mind that taking a shower general- ly uses less water than a bath -- depending, of course on the duration of your showers. Leaking faucets and toilets also waste a major amount of water. If you suspect you have a leak somewhere in your plumbing system, or your faucets, get it fixed; otherwise you're money is literally going "down the drain." You can also have the temperature setting on your hot water heater turned down to cut down on the power it takes to heat your water. Check with your utility compa- ny for information.
