"We feel that selecting land- fill sites, specifically in the GTA, may not be the answer, al- ternatives do exist, but they do not seem to fit the philosophy of this government," Mr. Kemp says. "It is unfortunate that we have not seen any positive sign of the ability of this government to handle waste management." He called on the government to take a greater responsibility in seeking out alternatives to the landfill method such as product stewardship and user pay on bottles. He requested that the govern- ment amend sections of the bill | \] Plan to Attend FREE RRSP SEMINAR SEE Plan to Attend | Co # Sponsored by LAURENTIAN BANK . Mr. Kemp said he was pleased with the presentation and said his arguments went uncontested. But like so many other groups, is unsure what the process will accomplish. He says they'll just have to wait and see what decision is made. But he says Zero Garbage will be ready when a site is identi- fied to ensure that the rights of individuals are protected. He fears however that a deci- sion may already have been made and this process has been for naught. "I'm not confident that they're going to make the right deci- sion," he said. "I have a great deal of fear that they will cede to lobby groups." Despite the outcome, Mr. Kemp says the double represen- tation of the two Scugog groups, as well as the Region of Dur- ham's presentation on Jan. 28, "made an impression." "It put the impression across of the effects that a search has on asmall community," he said. An announcement concern- ing a long list of potential sites is expected to be made in early April following the passage of Bill 143. It was due to be an- nounced last November, with a short list this month, but was delayed at Queen's Park.
