Country Style Bantams trailing in playoff series three points to one After a strong start, the Port Perry Country Style Bantam As came up a little short and found themselves trailing their O.M.H.A. quarter-finals three points to one by virtue of a tie and a loss. 'Tuesday night, the Country Style crew opened up in Cobourg. Scott Heasman and Chad Kearns were relegated to the stands with their specialized equipment, namely casts and crutches; but Craig '"'Rub- berman'"' Laird was a welcome returnee to the lineup and Sport- sland's Daryl Bourgeois and Bill Zaparanuik were valuable additions in the hunt for that first big win. The Cougars got out of the blocks quickly with a power-play marker as they only took :28 with the advan- tage to go up 1-0. Port returned the favor when only :18 into their first advantage Jay Tredway finished off some good work by Matt Morris and Jeremy Norton with a powerful wrist shot inside the post from 30 feet out. After the two teams battled through a scoreless second period, Cobourg took another lead just :19 into the third. Port came back just 1:10 later when Jeremy Geer won a great battle in the corner and Laird was on the doorstep to poke in a short rebound. The home team went up 3-2 five minutes after that, but Port refused to quit and were rewarded quickly again when Joe Broadworth set up Sean Ellis for a picture goal. The last 7:22 featured shut out goaltending at both ends despite some prime opportunities and the game went to a 10 minute OT. Midway through the extra period, Tredway's second gave Port their first lead of the game; another fine blast assisted by Broadworth and Ellis. Unfortunately, Port was generously given two questionable penalties in the OT and killed all but 14 of the second one before Cobourg's Derek Wright salvaged a point for the Cougars with only 37 ticks on the clock. Despite the disappointment of having a point stolen from them, the Country Style team should be pro- ud of a super effort from James Paterson in the net, and 15 skaters in front of him. This may have been the finest total effort of the year and continuing this type of play will give Port an excellent chance to advance. Unfortunately, the trend was reversed on Saturday night at home. Although Cobourg picked up the ma- jority of the penalties in the game, Port didn't take advantage nearly often enough; and the visitors made the most-of theirs to gain a 6-3 win. The Cougars jumped into a quick 2-0 lead on a pair of power-play goals before Jay King came back with one of his own. Ellis picked off a loose puck inside the zone and fed King a perfect pass for a bullet one- timer into the top corner. Cobourg continued to make the most of their chances, going up 4-1. Dave Bourgeois gave Port life on another man advantage in the se- cond period. Norton and Laird com- bined to keep the puck inside the blue line and feed Bourgeois in the high slot. A hard wrist shot closed the gap to 4-2. Bourgeois closed out Port's offen- sive output in the third, scoring his second from close in after some hard work by Laird and Geer to set up the play. Penalties to the Cougars gave Country Style golden oppor- tunities to rally but the powerplays were ineffective and Cobourg iced a 6-3 victory. Port will travel to Cobourg again on Tuesday night to try and get back into contention in the series. Big V defeats Van Camp 7-2 in Pee Wee action Saturday, Feb. 8 found Big V and Larocque locked up in Pee Wee house league action. These two teams had tied the week be- fore at one apiece and were look- ing to settle things this week. Both teams were going all out with chances at both ends of the rink but it was Big V that broke out on top as Ryan Puckrin passed to Jeremy Gibson who fired a low shot just inside the post to put his team up 1-0. The score stayed this way as the teams goaltenders, Doug Short for Big V and John Babcock for L.arocque were coming up with the big save when called upon. With time running down in the first period Ryan William- son fed the puck to Kent John- ston who deked the Larocque goalie and lifted a backhander up over him to put Big V up 2-0. This seemed to unsettle the La- rocque team as Big V opened the game up with two more goals within the next one-and- a-half minutes to jump into a 4- 0 lead. Both these goals were unassisted by Jason Robinson and Jeremy Gibson respective- ly. The second period was a lot tighter as both teams showed strong defence. Big V did the only scoring in the second pick- ing up another unassisted goal by Jeremy Gibson and a 5-0 lead. In the third period Big V con- tinued to carry the play to La- rocque and opened up a 6-0 lead as Jeremy Gibson picked up his fourth goal on a set-up from Phil Donnelly. Larocque spoiled Big V's goaltender Doug Short's shut-out bid in the latter stages of the game as Mat McClelland scored from Jay Fletcher. The teams managed to get an- other goal each as first it was Big V's Jeff Whitefield from Jeremy then Larocque's Chris Jamieson from Jay Fletcher to finish the game with a Big V victory by a 7-2 count.
