"A Family Tradition for.125 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, February 11, 1992 - 29 MoJacks win three From Page 24 But 13 seconds later, Clair Cornish finished off a passing Jay from Mark McKay and Peter Young to tie up the game at one goal apiece. And three minutes later, McKay from Cornish and Young, gave the Mo- Jacks a 2-1 lead. Late in the period, however, Brian McArthur, assisted by Markwick and Dwayne Spoelstra, evened up the match on another power-play goal with Cornish sitting in the sin bin serving a bench minor for too many men on the ice. Cornish scored the only goal of the second period with assists going to Lally and Young at the 1:29 mark. There was no more scoring in the game until late in the third when Lakefield pulled their goalie in an attempt to notch the equalizer, and with just 32 seconds remaining, Ver- non, assisted by Cornish and Men- zies, fired the puck into the empty net. First Win Last Thursday night's game in - Port Perry was never really in doubt. Shelfoon drew first blood with a blast from the point that eluded the Chiefs' netminder. Assists on the goal went to Jeff Barr and Scott Erickson. Randy DeCarlo, assisted by Chris Longfield and Mike Bullock, tied it up at 15:19, but that would be as Atom Bs The Pineridge Sports Atom B team began their series with Napanee on the right foot as they won their first game on Sunday. Even though Napanee counted for the first goal midway through the second period, it was only a matter of time before Port collected one of their own, as Port outplayed their opponents. Brad Monsma got the ball rolling - when he accepted a pass from Adam Hobbs and put it away. This tie was soon to be broken as Chris Jones set the stage when he won the faceoff in the offense zone and fed the puck to Ryan McQuade. Ryan took a shot only to have Greg Bruton quickly pick up the rebound to give Port a 2-1 lead. Port continued to apply pressure as did Napanee giving way for some close calls, but it was all over when, less than two minutes to go in the game Adam Hobbs set up Scott Sanderson in front of the net and put it home to win the game 3-1. Port's offense continue to hustle while defensemen McCready, Chambers, Moynes and Brain are consistently providing great service along the blue line. Port will travel to Napanee on Saturday for their next game and host Napanee on Sunday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. Good luck Port! close as the Chiefs would come. At 17:13, John Lally grabbed a Vernon pass to take the lead again, and 20 seconds later, Todd Taylor from Shelfoon and Harman, made it 3-1. And before the period ended, Vernon, assisted by Menzies and Lally, gave Port Perry a 4-1 cushion. Allan Medhurst combined with Derek Scott for Lakefield second counter early in the second, but Menzies, from Erickson and Shel- foon, late in the period, added to the MoJacks' lead. Vernon notched his second goal of the game with just 22 seconds gone in the third, with assists from Cor- nish and Menzies. Scott, from Medhurst and Mundell, retaliated for the Chiefs, but a few minutes later, Lally with his second goal of the evening, assisted by Menzies, continued the barrage with a power-play marker. Gerry Marino from Jason McCor- nick and Terry Walton closed out the Chiefs' scoring, and another power-play marker by Mark McKay, assisted by Frank Kavanagh and Cornish, made it an 8-4 final. Missing From Action Mike Coulson has been missing from the MoJacks' line-up for the past four games as the result of a league suspension. He's been miss- ed. So has Trevor McIntyre who has been out with a hand injury. Overhead Doors play well in Campbellford After finishing off a strong Lind- say team in first round playoff ac- tion, the Doors paused to play in a Campbellford tournament prior to meeting Belleville. The team played the tournament hosts on Sunday, Feb. 9 and totally dominated the game. Paul Shrigley came up big with a shut-out game as Port rolled over Campbellford 6-0. Justin Halligan started the scor- ing on a nice set-up by Robinson to end the first period 1-0. Second period play saw goals by Robert Gracie, Jamie Strickert, and Kevin Gray with assists by Wootton and Laird to make it 4-0. Shrigley was tested on two occasions that could have resulted in goals but came up big and demoralized Campbellford. Port added two more goals in the third by Shane Norton and Aaron Levy with assists going to Robinson and Halligan to end the game and - advance the Doors to the next round of the "A" championship. Game two was played against the "All Saints" Peterborough team and from the drop of the puck, it was Port all the way. Paul Shrigley came up with his second big game of the day allowing only one goal for Port to win it 6-1. Justin Halligan started the scor- ing off again with a breakaway from a super pass from Norton at 9:35 of the first period. Darryl Moase and Kristan Wootton added two more with assists by Strickert, Gray, Shanley and Baxter. "All Saints" finally put one past Paul to end the period 3-1. Port owned the second period with the "All Saints" goalie stopping pucks non-stop for 10 minutes. Shane Norton finally scored Port's fourth goal from Halligan and Laird. It could easily have been 10-1 at the end of the second. Action got rough in the third as Cartwright Ball registration With registration set to begin on Feb. 15 (2-4 p.m.) at the Blackstock Town Hall, Cartwright Minor Ball will be offering players more play- ing options than ever before. The program has been expanded to in- clude a T-Ball division plus two year age divisions all the way to the senior level of play. The league will have six levels of play where there were only four in the past. The league has given the nod to the formation of a 'rep' softball team at the squirt level (born in 1980/81). All players in this age category and registered with Cart- wright Minor Ball will be able to try out for this team in the early spring, following registration. This will be a travelling team and the players would not be involved in the regular house league program. As well, the league is considering the idea of offering "All-Star baseball at one or more age levels. This would involve the formation of teams made up of the best Players from each team and level in the league and playing exhibition games and tournaments in the area. The intent is to provide the oppor- tunity for players to play baseball or "hardball," while at the same time continuing with the existing house league softball program. This year's registrar for the association, Rob Michel, has organized three locations and dates for registration. In addition to the time on Feb. 15, there will be a se- cond registration on Feb. 27 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. and the last on Feb. 29 from 2-4 p.m. All registrations are located at the Old Town Hall in Blackstock (south of the corner on Scugog Street). The new age categories and years of birth are: T-Ball (1986/87) ; Tyke (1984/85); Mite (1982/83); Squirt (1980/81); Senior (1977/78/79); Senior plus (1976/75/74). Players younger or older than this range may be considered depending on space and ability. In addition to the sign-up of players, the league is looking for people who can assist with various facets of working within the ball pro- gram. Parents and others are ask- ed to indicate participation interest at registration. For further information regar- ding registration, players and families may contact Rob Michel at 986-4254. "All Saints' became very frustrated with the Doors playing exceptional hockey. The game end- ed with Port scoring two more in the final on goals by Danny Robinson and Robert Gracie with assists by Halligan and Levy. A total team effort and a final game showdown for the '""A" cham- pionship ahead of them. After a shutout game and allow- ing only one goal in game two, Paul Shrigley certainly deserved a chance at the championship game and got it. Their final opponents were the excellent team St. Johns of Peterborough and these guys real- ly looked great in both their wins earlier in the day. From the drop of the puck, it was sheer excitement for the next hour with both teams proving that it was no fluke that got them to the final big game. St. Johns drew first blood at 1:29 of the first period and appeared to have the slight edge right up to 6:08 of the second period when they beat Shrigley on a screened shot that he had no chance. At this point, the Doors kicked in to over-drive and took the play to their opposition. Jamie Strickert tip- ped in a shot from Moase to make it 2-1 and they turned up the heat creating numerous scoring chances. St. Johns goalie was as hot as ours - and held a very determined Port Perry team off the scoreboard for the rest of the game. Shrigley too, refused to allow any more scoring and a great game ended 2-1. Darryl Moase was the very deser- ving M.V.P. of the game with honorable mention to Paul, allowing only three goals in nine periods of hockey including his shutout. A great day of hockey, a total team effort and a fine display of sportsmanship from all guys on this team. Keep up the good work coaches and good luck in Belleville. Pee Wee As defeated 10-1 Last Tuesday the Pee Wee Legion A team headed east for the second game of the playoffs against Cobourg. It was a lovely drive down, a little cold, but what the heck, itis winter. We had a hamburger at Wendys along the south side ofthe 401, abiton the greasy side, but very good. On the way home, we stopped at Harveys on the north side. They make a hamburger a "beautiful thing" and it was. Oh, by the way, all players showed up for the game and put equipment and skates on and had a lovely skate, but we forgot to play hockey, as evidenced in a 10-1 she- lacing. The ride home was a lot colder (and quieter). . SC ¥ pa Township of Scugog Mayor Howard Hall accepts a cheque for $1,000 for the Community Memorial Hospital Building Fund. A somewhat sluggish Port Perry team found themselves trailing the Bar- rie Belles at the end of the first period by a score of 6-2. Jennifer Smith scored Port's first goal as she fired the ring at Barrie's net very neatly beating the goaltender. Some very nice passing by Amy Parliament and Megan Marlowe earned them assists. With only 051 remaining in the first period Megan Marlowe fired in an unassisted goal. During the second period Port Perry fared a little better. Karen Kett, who was standing in between the pipes for the absent Tracy Pelow, seemed to get a better grip Pearce The Port Perry Novice I team opened their playoff series against Brooklin-Whitby on Friday night at home. It was an exciting game that saw the teams tied at one goal each un- til the final minutes of the third period when the visitors popped in three quick goals. The Port goal was scored on a blistering shot by Steven Wygerde. On Saturday night in Whitby, our boys went ahead early in the game with two goals in the first period. The first goal was scored by "Mini" Adam Moynes assisted by Chris on the angles, to allow only one goal. Port Perry started to come to life as some well-executed passing plays resulted in an additional three goals. Jennifer Morden cleared the ring up to Michelle Fitzpatrick who raced in on the Barrie goaltender to barely miss scoring Port's third goal. Kim Poppleton was in position to pick up the rebound to cleanly beat the netminder. Leea Kinnunen and Jennifer Smith earned assists on Megan Marlowe's second goal of the game and with only :29 remaining Dawn Doucette picked up a pass from Amy Parliament to sail through Barrie's defence to rack up goal number five. The game ended with the scoreboard reading 7-5 in Bar- rie"s favor. \ 0 ; Skerratt and Billy Carr. Thirty seconds later, Steven Wygerde and Braden Tarbotton combined to score Port's second goal. Port played an exciting, checking game that kept a determined Whitby team off the scoreboard until late in the second period and kept them scoreless in the third. Excellent defensive play by Sean Jeffrey and John Burnett frustrated the Whitby forwards. D'Arcy Stephens, alone in net, stood strong against many Whitby shots both Fri- day and Saturday. Next playoff game is in Brooklin on Tuesday night.
